Status: Relief/Casual (hourly, non-exempt) - less than 23 hours per week.
Relief/Casual employees must provide a minimum of 4 shifts per month, including 1 night shift and 1 weekend shift.
Day Shift: 6:30 AM-6:30 PM and Night Shift: 6:30 PM-6:30 AM.
Location: Hospice House in Bend, Oregon.
Summary/Objective: The Certified Nursing Assistant is a paraprofessional member of the interdisciplinary team who works under the supervision of a registered nurse in our inpatient care unit. The CNA practices within the scope of their practice, as defined by the State Board of Nursing, and adheres to the plan of care. This position carries out duties assigned to increase the level of patient comfort and to maintain good personal hygiene and a safe environment for the patient.

May be exposed to infections and contagious diseases. Contact with patients under wide variety of circumstances.
May be exposed to/occasionally exposed to patient elements. Subject to varying and unpredictable situations.
Handles emergency or crisis situations.
Physical demands also include the ability to lift patients, assist with ambulation, walking, carrying, and pushing.
OSHA exposure category 1: Position includes tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, tissues.
Required Personal Protective Equipment as conditions warrant: Gloves, gown, mask, mask with shield, goggles, shoe covers, bouffant cap.

Essential Functions:
- Communicate in a professional and caring manner to the patient, family, and/or caregivers while maintaining confidentiality of patient and related health information.
- Assess the patients ability to tolerate treatment before beginning care. Assess patient condition after care.
- Meet the safety needs of the patient and self by utilizing good body mechanics and proper use of equipment.
- Obtain and document patient vital signs and communicate changes/concerns immediately.
- Observe patients skin and provide appropriate care to prevent breakdown of tissue. Report any changes to the nurse.
- Arrive to work on time, prepared to work collaboratively as a team.
- Adhere to written and oral instructions for patient care as indicated by the registered nurse on duty.
- Assist the patient with all aspects of personal care, ambulation, and positioning as required and provide guidance to the family/caregiver regarding personal care of the patient.
- Prepare and serve meals according to policy and procedure and assist with feeding as required.
- Perform housekeeping services that are necessary for the health and safety of the patient/family/caregiver.
- Check temperature of all refrigerators & freezers containing food and log results daily. Store food per health code regulations.
- Answer patients call light/bell, telephone, and entry doors promptly while assisting with or communicating needs to appropriate person.
- Follow the guidelines for universal precautions when providing patient care and demonstrate proper techniques in application of infection control standards.
- Demonstrate excellent listening skills and maintain strict confidentiality of patient/family/caregiver information.
- Recognize the importance of and maintain professional boundaries and carry out duties and responsibilities of position in a manner that exemplifies excellent customer service. Consistently represent the organization to all internal and external customers with integrity and professionalism.
- Provide for a safe environment for patients, guests, visitors, and employees and adhere to all policies, procedures, and regulations regarding patient care, conduct, safety, fire, security, and risk management.
- Attend and participate in shift report, in-services, department, and agency meetings.
- Participate in educational programs and in-service meetings as requested. Attend continuing education courses related to area of specialization to remain current in the field.
- Ensure strict compliance with HIPAA regulations in all aspects of the role, maintaining confidentiality, privacy, and security of protected health information (PHI) at all times.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Valid CNA licensure.
- Ability to pass a background test, drug screen, and TB test.
- Graduate of an accredited CNA program.
- At least 18 years of age.
- One to two years of recent medical care experience in an institutional setting. Ideal candidates will possess 1-2 years of home health or hospice experience.
- Valid CPR Certification.
- Oregon Food Handlers Certification.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
