Schedule: Day Shift (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM)
Salary: $85,000 – $98,000 annually
Job Summary
Smith Personnel Solutions is seeking a Senior Cost Analyst to support and lead cost accounting activities within a manufacturing environment. This role is responsible for analyzing production costs, maintaining accurate costing structures, and improving visibility into material, labor, and overhead expenses across plant operations. A key focus of this position is leading the implementation and ongoing management of a costing system within the ERP, ensuring accurate tracking of job costs and financial performance. The role will work closely with plant and operations teams to analyze cost variances, improve processes, and support data-driven decision-making. The ideal candidate will have experience in manufacturing cost accounting and a proven ability to own projects from start to finish, particularly related to costing, systems, or process improvements.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the implementation and ongoing support of the costing system (Cost Configurator in ERP)
  • Analyze and maintain accurate production costs, including materials, labor, and overhead
  • Partner with plant leadership to support financial analysis and operational decision-making
  • Monitor and explain cost variances, identifying drivers and recommending improvements
  • Ensure accuracy of work order processing, including material usage, labor postings, and variances
  • Review and manage Work in Process (WIP) and related accounts
  • Support budgeting and forecasting (labor, headcount, and production expenses)
  • Analyze plant performance, including cost verification (labor rates, overhead, purchased parts)
  • Prepare and review month-end reports, including variance analysis and performance metrics
  • Support compliance activities, including inventory and WIP reconciliations
  • Provide ad hoc analysis and reporting to operations and leadership
  • Review balance sheet and P&L accounts and resolve discrepancies
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required (Accounting or Finance preferred)
  • Minimum 5+ years of cost accounting experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Strong understanding of production costing (materials, labor, overhead)
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Proven ability to lead projects from start to finish
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
  • Stable work history
  • Must be based in Houston, TX (no relocation offered)
Preferred
  • Experience with JDE (JD Edwards), Hyperion, or SmartView
  • Experience supporting ERP implementations or costing system improvements
