Key Responsibilities and Duties
perform a variety of tasks tailored to individual care plans, generally categorized into personal care, health monitoring, and household support:
  • Personal Care (ADLs): Assisting with bathing, showering, grooming, hair care, oral hygiene, and dressing.
  • Mobility & Transfers: Helping patients move around, including transferring them from bed to chair (using safe lifting techniques/equipment) and accompanying them on walks.
  • Health Monitoring: Checking and recording vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration) and observing skin condition.
  • Medical Support: Providing medication reminders or assisting with self-administered medications as allowed by state regulations.
  • Nutrition & Meal Prep: Planning and preparing nutritious meals, feeding patients, and shopping for groceries.
  • Household Care: Maintaining a clean and safe environment by performing light housekeeping, such as changing bed linens, doing laundry, and cleaning the patients immediate area.
  • Documentation: Keeping accurate, daily records of services provided and reporting any significant changes in the patients physical or mental condition to their supervisor.

  • Settings: Private homes, assisted living facilities, or residential care settings.
  • Physical Demands: Requires moderate physical activity, including lifting, bending, and standing for long periods.
  • Schedule: Often provides flexible hours, but may include mornings, evenings.
  • Autonomy & Travel: Work independently, traveling between homes, often requiring schedule flexibility.
  • Collaboration: Strong communication skills to work within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Problem-Solving: Differentiate urgent from non-urgent situations and manage varied patient needs.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency with required technology for documentation and communication. Works independently in various patient homes, often managing multiple patients.
  • Requires strong time management, problem-solving, and independent decision-making within their scope.
  • Adapts care plans based on the unique resources and challenges of the home setting.
  • Household Support: Performing light housekeeping (laundry, cleaning), meal preparation, and grocery shopping.
  • Mobility & Safety: Helping with transfers (bed/chair) and ensuring a safe, clean environment.
  • Transportation: Accompanying clients to appointments or running errands.
  • Documentation: Keeping daily records of services rendered and client progress.
Typical Requirements & Qualifications
  • Training & Certification: Completion of a state-approved training program.
  • Certification: Active registration on the states Home Care Aide Registry.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Background: Ability to pass background checks (fingerprinting) and drug screens.
  • Health: Proof of required health screenings (TB testing) and immunizations (COVID-19).
  • Certifications: Current CPR/BLS certification.
  • Skills: Strong communication skills, empathy for the elderly/frail, and the ability to work independently.
