Job Description
Position Title: Principal Abdominal Donor Procurement Surgeon
Reports To: Chief of Abdominal Programs
Location: Chicago, IL
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced transplant surgeon to serve as a Principal Abdominal Donor Procurement Surgeon. This role is instrumental in advancing the utilization of Organ Care System (OCS) technology for liver transplantation. The surgeon will be responsible for performing high-quality donor liver procurements, ensuring standardized surgical assessment, and supporting transplant centers nationwide in optimizing organ acceptance decisions.
Key Responsibilities
• Perform all aspects of abdominal donor procurement, including:
o Clinical assessment of donor organs
o Surgical retrieval of abdominal organs
o OCS instrumentation procedures
• Execute procedures to the highest clinical standards in accordance with established protocols and training guidelines
• Maintain and uphold quality standards for OCS surgical retrieval processes
• Contribute to the development and refinement of:
o Donor organ assessment protocols
o Organ management procedures
o Communication workflows for OCS liver procurements
• Train, mentor, and support surgical team members, including:
o Proctoring procurement cases
o Assisting in the development of less experienced surgeons
• Perform comprehensive surgical assessments of donor livers, including back-table preparation and vascular anastomoses when required
• Collaborate closely with transplant surgeons at receiving centers to provide real-time clinical insights that support organ acceptance decisions
• Communicate effectively with clinical teams to facilitate organ allocation and logistics
• Support additional clinical and organizational initiatives as needed
Qualifications
• MD degree required
• Minimum of 5+ years of experience in:
o Deceased donor abdominal organ procurement and assessment, and/or
o Advanced abdominal surgical procedures
• At least 2 years of experience as a primary liver procurement surgeon, or completion of an ASTS fellowship (or equivalent transplant experience)
• Demonstrated expertise in donor liver retrieval (DBD and/or DCD), with supporting surgical logbook
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams
• Ability to work independently and perform effectively in high-pressure clinical environments
• Proficiency with electronic communication tools and standard office software
Work Environment & Requirements
• Extensive travel across the United States is required
• Work is performed on-site at transplant centers and hospitals
• Compliance with hospital credentialing requirements, including vaccination policies, is required
Compensation & Benefits
• Base Salary: $400,000 – $550,000 (commensurate with experience and qualifications)
