Job Summary
$20.56 – $31.83 per hour (DOQ) – On-Call
Performs responsible, experienced work ensuring a safe and secure aquatic environment. Serves as a lead worker overseeing daily operations at an assigned beach area or pool facility.
Responsibilities:
• Oversees work of team members during operations including accountability for job completion, coordination of logistics and overall welfare and performance of assigned personnel.
• Ensures the safety and regulates conduct of pool patrons; enforces pool policies, rules and regulations; conducts swimming tests with children to allow them to swim unattended; provides customer service to patrons, including handling customer conflict and
complaints, as necessary.
• Performs rescues and provides appropriate care and follow-up procedures; uses proper use of equipment in the performance of first aid; provides written reports on all accidents.
• Attends in-service training and staff meetings; participates in the preparation of daily records; provides guidance to less experienced Lifeguards during shift.
• Measures water chemistry and adjusts chemicals as necessary to maintain proper chemical balances of pool and whirlpool; maintains appropriate records of water quality of pool; assists in the proper maintenance and sanitary operation of the pool, pool area and locker rooms; maintains proper updated safety requirements; handles mechanical/pump room or chemical problems as directed.
• May assist Recreation/Aquatic Program Coordinator in daily aquatic managerial duties.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school diploma; considerable lifeguarding experience.
• Must possess, or be able to obtain within 30 days of hire, a valid Virginia driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record based on James City County’s criteria.
• Must possess the following certifications:
o American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certificate
o American Red Cross First Aid Certificate
o American Red Cross Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation for the Professional Rescuer (CPR-PRI)
• The following certifications are preferred:
o Aquatic Facility Operator certification (AFO)
o American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
o American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI)
o Certified Pool Operator’s License
• Knowledge of water rescue methods; lifeguarding and first-aid practices and techniques; swimming pool safety; principles and processes for providing customer service including setting and meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
• Skill in use of computer software, especially Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to deal courteously but firmly with pool patrons; carry out water rescues; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with County staff and patrons.
