Buckelew Programs mission is to promote recovery, resilience and hope by providing behavioral health and support services that enhance quality of life. Since 1971 the agency has provided behavioral health services along a continuum of care. Helen Vine Recovery Center (HVRC), a program of the agency, is a licensed 26-bed co-ed residential detoxification program located in San Rafael that provides welcoming, recovery-oriented services to individuals with alcohol and drug addiction issues, as well as co-occurring psychiatric problems.

The Detox Counselor I works with clients in areas of assessment, intake/discharge, charting and providing individual counseling and emotional support. Performs other duties including maintaining logs, monitoring medication, and performing crisis intervention when needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Perform assessments, intakes, discharges, charting and monitoring of clients.
2. Perform individual counseling and provide emotional support for clients.
3. Make appropriate referrals and attend to personal needs of clients.
4. Perform crisis intervention when needed; uphold the rules at all times and respond as a team when the situation warrants.
5. Manage drop-in emergencies, evaluate and determine the need to call 911 when necessary.
6. Log all information and incident reports on client, in log, so that other staff can be informed.
7. Coordinate volunteer’s donations.
8. Ensure the safety of the clients and staff at all times.
9. Maintain good boundaries and exercise confidentiality concerning clients.
10. Facilitate and monitor groups.
11. Monitor client’s medication.
12. Attend supervision meetings with the Program Director.
13. Participate in staff training and all staff meetings.
14. Maintain structure of the facility and understand the mission of the program and always work towards it.
15. Take inventory of facility needs and/or maintenance problems.
16. Oversee laundry and daily chores; do laundry and other chores as needed.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience: Minimum of a High School Diploma required. Must have proficient written and verbal communication skills. Certification as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor or currently in the process of obtaining the Certification (CAARH or other training approved by The State Department of Alcohol/Drug Programs) preferred. Recent and/or relevant experience working with the population of the mentally disabled and dual-diagnosed population is preferred. Have proven knowledge and understanding of AA/NA Twelve-Step programs and resources.
Skills & Abilities: Ability to relate well with others, to balance many tasks and responsibilities simultaneously, to be empathic, warm, firm and supportive with clients. Possess and use good written and verbal communication skills. Possess a willingness and desire to learn and grow within this position and the program. Understand and know how to work as a team player. Computer literate. First Aid/CPR training/certification also preferable. Valid California driver’s license with an insurable driving record preferred. Have knowledge of the resources in and around the County. Have at least two years continuous sobriety, if in recovery. Flexible schedule required.
Physical Requirements: Capable of the following intermittent activities: stretching, bending, kneeling, twisting, squatting, reaching above and below the shoulder, pushing, pulling, grasping and lifting up to 40 pounds. Capable of the following extended activities: walking, driving, writing, standing, hearing and sitting. Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically. Applicants are required to complete and clear a TB test as required by Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs.

Special Note: Employees in this position are required to register and participate in the process of obtaining Certification as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor (or maintain certification if already certified) through the California Association of DUI Treatment Programs (CADTP) or the California Consortium of Additional Programs and Professionals (CCAPP) or other training approved by the State Department of Alcohol/Drug Programs. Loss of certification/registration, or failure to become certified within five years of registration, will result in loss of qualifications for continued employment in this position.

ABOUT THIS POSITION: This is a relief position. There is no regular schedule, hours are based upon vacant shifts and typically relief staff cover for regular staff utilizing PTO or during times of vacancy. Shifts available may include day, swing and nocturnal 7 days per week, 365 days per year. Relief staff are asked to accept at least three shifts and attend at least one regularly schedule staff meeting per calendar quarter to remain active.
