Reporting to Getty's Controller, the Tax Manager is responsible for overseeing all tax-related matters for the organization, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations applicable to a complex non-profit entity. While managing a team of two, this role oversees tax filings, provisions, audits, and multistate compliance while supporting the tax implications of a large endowment with significant private equity investments. The Tax Manager also provides advisory support across Getty.
This position operates in a professional environment and works closely with finance leadership and institutional partners to support the organization's mission through sound tax governance. Following a period of three to six months, there is potential for a hybrid work arrangement.

Tax Compliance & Filings
- Oversee California-based property tax (including non-profit exemptions), sales and use tax, and other indirect tax filings.
- Ensure compliance with federal and multi-state tax requirements and registrations.
- Monitor changes in tax laws and regulations impacting non-profit organizations and advise leadership accordingly.
- Understanding the impact and providing guidance on Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT).
Tax Accounting & Reporting
- Prepare and review income tax provisions, deferred tax calculations, and related disclosures for financial statements.
- Assist with year-end close processes related to tax accounts and reporting.
Endowment & Investment Support
- Provide tax oversight for a large endowment with significant private equity investments (60%+), including review of K1s and investment-related tax matters.
- Coordinate with internal investment and finance teams, and external advisors on tax implications of investment activities.
Audits & Stakeholder Support
- Serve as primary tax liaison for internal and external auditors.
- Respond to tax authority inquiries and manage tax audits and examinations.
- Support internal stakeholders across the institution with tax planning, compliance, and advisory needs.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Manage and mentor a small team of tax professionals, including workload planning, performance goals and reviews, and professional development.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with finance, legal, foundation grants, and operations teams.
- Contribute to process improvements, documentation, and internal controls related to tax.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or similar field.
- Master's degree in Taxation is a plus.
- 10+ years of relevant experience in non-profit tax or public accounting with exposure to corporate and multi-state taxation.
- Demonstrated experience with federal and state compliance, tax provisions, deferred tax accounting, audits, and complex filings.
- Experience managing and developing staff is required.
- Experience supporting investment structures, including private equity, is strongly preferred.
Technical Skills
- Strong proficiency in Oracle Fusion or similar enterprise resource planning software, and cloud-based productivity and collaboration tools (e.g. Office365, Zoom, Teams, Acrobat, DocuSign)
- In-depth knowledge of non-profit tax regulations and reporting requirements.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, including tax-related financial statement reporting and disclosures.
- Ability to interpret complex tax rules and clearly communicate implications to non-tax stakeholders.
