Job Summary:
Under the supervision and/or direction of the Chief Technician, Nurse Manager, Charge Nurse or Staff RN, may perform various duties assisting nursing staff in the preparation of dialysis equipment and in the treatment and care of patients, in accordance to established policies and procedures of the Center.
Qualifications:
1. High School graduate.
2. American Heart Association, BLS Provider Card - Required
3. Hemodialysis Certification through either the Board of Nephrolou Examiners Nursing and Technology (BONENT) or through the National Association of Nephrology Technicians/ Technologist (NANT). - Required
4. Able to read and speak English - bilingual preferred
5. One year experience in the medical field either as a certified hemodialysis technician involved in patient care - preferred
Duties and Responsibilities:
Patient Care Activities:
l . Perform routine treatment procedures such as insertion of fistula needles, initiation, and termination of treatments.
2. Administration of Heparin and Normal Saline, as required and ordered.
3. Perform pre-dialysis safety tests and document properly.
4. Check, adjust and record blood flow rate, machine pressures, Heparin dosage/administration when taking blood pressure during treatment procedure.
5. Make rounds to assigned patients, anticipate needs, answer patients' calls, and respond to visual and audible alarms of equipment.
6. Ensure all safety parameters on the equipment are set and maintained.
7. Assist in the positioning, lifting, and turning of patients using proper body mechanics.
Take vital signs before, during and after dialysis procedure to assigned patients.
8. Monitor patients during dialysis procedure. Report any unusual changes, signs or symptoms to the nurse.
9. Obtain blood specimen as ordered and required. Label blood properly and complete requisitions.
1 0. Spin blood specimens in the Centrifuge, as required and directed.
1 1 . Complete appropriate documentation after each task. Report unusual events to the immediate supervisor.
Other Activities:
1. Perform Hard Water test, as assigned.
2. Perform Chloramine tests, as assigned.
3. Keep various logs updated, per policy.
4. Prepare, gather, distribute supplies prior to treatment or as per established routine procedures.
5. Re-stock supplies in designated areas.
6. Receive and store shipments of supplies. Verify amount and type of supplies received. Submit packing slips immediately to appropriate personnel.
7. Clean and maintain dialysis and accessory equipment per policy.
8. Assist in maintaining a safe and clean environment by reporting equipment that is out of order and other problems to the supervisor.
9. Establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors, and unit personnel, while maintaining confidentiality of patient information.
10, Participate in and contribute to staff meetings and other unit activities.
11. Attend in-service education programs as directed, to learn new treatment skills, procedures, etc.
