Central Piedmont Community College is a comprehensive institution that places primary emphasis on excellence in classroom instruction. Continuing Education (CE) instructors are expected to demonstrate and maintain competence in each of the following areas throughout their employment at the college.
Position DutiesI. Mastery of Subject Matter
· Lead guided tastings, food pairings, and off-flavor identification exercises.
· Prepare students for the Cicerone certification exams.
· Incorporate responsible alcohol service and compliance with NC ABC/ALE regulations into instruction.
· Deliver engaging lectures, labs, and field-based demonstrations that reflect current industry standards.
· Provide hands-on training in safe equipment use,
· Evaluate student performance through assignments, skills assessments, and certification-aligned competencies.
· Prepares records and reports regarding attendance, grades, course files, and course evaluation; submits textbook/materials requests.
· Prepare students for the Cicerone Level 1 and/or Level 2 certification exams.
II. Teaching Performance
· Teach a course(s) appropriate to their field or discipline.
· Plan and organize instruction in ways that maximize documented student learning.
· Employ appropriate teaching and learning strategies to communicate subject matter to students.
· Modify, where appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse student needs.
· Employ available instructional technology, i.e., the internet, interactive technology, when appropriate.
· Encourage the development of communication skills and higher-order thinking skills through appropriate assignments.
· Contribute to the selection and development of instructional materials in accordance with course objectives.
· Develop, update, and post course syllabi promptly.
III. Evaluation of Student Learning
· Establish meaningful student learning outcomes for courses/programs.
· Develop and explain methods that fairly measure student progress toward student learning outcomes.
· Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently and return student work promptly to promote maximum learning.
· Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit final grade rosters to the division administrator each semester according to established deadlines.
· Demonstrate sensitivity to student needs and circumstances.
IV. Support of College Policies and Procedures
· Teach classes as assigned in a multi-campus environment.
· Teach non-credit courses within field or discipline as needed.
· Post and maintain regular office hours to ensure accessibility to colleagues and to students for advisement and consultation.
· Serve as faculty advisor within the current college advisement system.
· Prepare, distribute, and submit syllabi and approved course outlines for all assigned sections in accordance with program and divisional policies.
· Maintain confidentiality of student information.
· Substitute for other instructors within the field or discipline in case of an absence.
V. Exercise stewardship of college facilities Program Activities
· Supports the college, division, and program’s values.
· Record and provide attendance data in accordance with College Policies and Procedures.
VI. Participation in College, Division, and Program
· Participate in committees as assigned.
· Participate in meetings and events required by the college, division, and program administrators.
· Respond in a timely fashion to information requests from college, division, and program administrators.
· Support part-time colleagues.
· Contribute to program and division curriculum development processes.
· Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills in communication with students, colleagues, staff, and administrators as an individual or as a part of a team.
VII. Contribution to Growth and Enhancement of College Mission and Programs
· Maintain familiarity with college goals, mission, and long-range plans.
· Contribute to planning and development processes through appropriate mechanisms and channels.
· Participate in professional activities that contribute to the educational goals of the college and its constituents.
· Perform professional responsibilities in accordance with pertinent goals, missions, and plans of the college, division, and programs.
· Participate in the marketing, recruitment, and retention of students, faculty, and staff.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be proficient in Brewing Science, Fermentation, Hospitality Management, or related field, have a current Certified Cicerone® (Level 1 and 2) credential, and one year of industry-related work experience in the beer, brewing, or beverage service industry. Candidates must have detailed knowledge of retail beer storage and service issues, an excellent understanding of modern beer styles, and familiarity with beer history and historical styles. Competence in identifying flawed beers and recognizing appropriate and inappropriate flavors in beer and must be able to demonstrate a good understanding of beer ingredients, the brewing process, and common principles of pairing beer with food.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Teaching experience in a community college or university setting.
· An associate degree, SERV Safe Alcohol, or RASP certifications. Certification, 2 years' experience, and compliance with NC ABC/ALE regulations.
