Position Summary

The Orthotist/Prosthetist Lab Technician is responsible for the technical fabrication, assembly, maintenance, and repair of orthotic and prosthetic devices under the guidance of a certified Orthotist or Prosthetist. This role is hands-on, requiring expertise in working with a variety of materials, tools, and equipment to ensure devices meet patient specifications, functional standards, and quality requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fabrication & Assembly

    • Manufacture orthotic and prosthetic components based on prescriptions, technical drawings, or digital designs.

    • Use hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment (e.g., vacuum forming, laminating, 3D printing) to create and finish devices.

    • Shape, grind, and polish materials such as plastics, metals, composites, and foams.

  • Repair & Modification

    • Inspect, adjust, and repair existing devices to maintain proper fit and function.

    • Modify devices as needed to meet patient needs or clinical specifications.

  • Quality Control

    • Check all devices for accuracy, durability, and compliance with safety standards.

    • Maintain clean, organized, and safe workspaces in accordance with OSHA and facility guidelines.

  • Collaboration

    • Work closely with Orthotists, Prosthetists, and clinicians to ensure the finished device meets clinical intent.

    • Communicate fabrication progress, challenges, and timelines effectively.

  • Inventory & Equipment Maintenance

    • Monitor supply levels for materials and order replacements as needed.

    • Perform basic maintenance and calibration of fabrication equipment.

Qualifications

  • Education:

    • High school diploma or equivalent; technical training in orthotics/prosthetics fabrication preferred.

  • Experience:

    • 1–3 years of experience in an orthotic/prosthetic lab or similar fabrication environment preferred.

  • Skills:

    • Proficient in working with hand and power tools.

    • Understanding of material properties and fabrication techniques.

    • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow technical specifications.

    • Good communication and teamwork skills.

Work Environment

  • Primarily in a fabrication laboratory setting.

  • May involve exposure to dust, fumes, and noise from tools and machinery.

  • Occasional lifting of heavy materials or devices.
