Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Security, Networking, or a related field and four (4) years of experience managing firewall devices and or/security appliances within an IT environment.
- An equivalent combination of education and related experience may be substituted.
Position Summary
The Firewall Administrator performs two core functions for the enterprise. The first is the day-to-day operations of in-place network security solutions, including firewalls and firewall management systems. The second is the identification, investigation, and deployment of new network security solutions. Secondary tasks may include involvement in the implementation of new security solutions and participation in the creation and or maintenance of policies, standards, baselines, guidelines, and procedures.
Position Duties
Strategy & Planning
- Leads the planning and design of enterprise security architecture.
- Participates in the creation of enterprise security policies, standards, baselines, guidelines, and procedures.
Acquisition & Deployment
- Maintains up-to-date detailed knowledge of the IT security industry including awareness of new or revised network security solutions, improved security processes, and the development of new attacks and threat vectors.
- Recommends additional network security solutions or enhancements to existing network security solutions to improve overall enterprise security.
- Performs the deployment, integration, and initial configuration of all new network security solutions and of any enhancements to existing network security solutions in accordance with standard best operating procedures generically and the enterprise’s security documents specifically.
Operational Management
- Maintains operational configurations of all in-place network security solutions.
- Monitors all in-place network security solutions for efficient and appropriate operations.
- Reviews alerts from firewalls and firewall management system and other network monitoring systems. Interprets the implications of that activity and devise plans for appropriate resolution.
- Participates in investigations into problematic activity.
- Participates in security audits and facilitates resolution of discovered network security problems.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Next-gen firewall management.
- IP, TCP, UDP, IPSEC, HTTP and HTTPS.
- Static and dynamic routing including BGP.
- PKI, encryption, and authentication protocols.
Skill in:
- Microsoft Office products.
- Firewall rule management.
- Palo Alto administration preferred.
Ability to:
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Conduct research into IT security issues and products as required.
- Present ideas in business-friendly and user-friendly language.
- Demonstrate analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Prioritize effectively.
- Be self-motivated and directed.
- Be team-oriented and skilled working within a collaborative environment.

Hiring Requirements
Background, Real Estate Tax, Drug and Medical
Allegheny County employment policy requires that in order to receive a final offer of employment, candidates must successfully pass a background check, which includes verification of Allegheny County Real Estate Tax status, along with a drug test and medical examination/s as required for the position. In cases pre-employment drug/medical screening is required, testing be completed within 48 hours of the acceptance of the conditional offer of employment.
Residency
New hires are required to become a resident of Allegheny County within one (1) year of appointment.
