Summary:

Responsible for addressing staff competency and implementing effective, unit specific staff education strategies. Responsible for the evaluation of unit specific educational needs and delivery of education to develop and enhance professional performance and skills within the specialty area. Plans, directs, coordinates and evaluates all overall clinical education and administrative activities; including fiscal, material and human resource management. Participates in the development and implementation of hospital policies and procedures. Maintains open communication with licensed and non-licensed pediatric as well as ancillary department staff that provide emergency services to promote improvement in performance. This position requires a sound knowledge of nursing practice and exceptional leadership abilities. 

POSITION EDUCATION/ QUALIFICATIONS­:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in nursing (BSN) is required (must be obtained within three (3) years of hire), MSN is preferred.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) Licensure in the state of Texas required.
  • Current BLS
  • PALS and ACLS Certification required within 12 months of hire date
  • TNCC/ENPC preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years clinical nursing experience required; hospital experience preferred.
  • One year of formal teaching experience or nursing professional development preferred.
  • Certification in emergency room nursing preferred
  • Must become PALS and/or ACLS Instructor (Sub-specialties may require additional instructor courses)
  • Organizational skills are necessary
  • Good written and verbal communication skills required
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with all levels of nursing, administration, and physicians

Responsibilities:

Ensures that care is delivered to each patient in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act of the State of Texas and ANA Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice.

The nurse systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice.

The nurse evaluates his/her own nursing practice in relation to professional practice standards and

relevant statues and regulations.

Standard V: Ethics

The nurse’s decisions and actions on behalf of patients are determined in an ethical manner.

The nurse collaborates with the patient, significant other, and health care providers in providing patient care.

Standard VII: Research

The nurse uses research findings in practice.

Standard VIII: Resource Utilization

The nurse considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, and cost in planning and delivering patient care.

The nurse contributes to the environment of care delivery within the practice settings.

Standard X: Accountability

The nurse is professionally and legally accountable for his/her practice. The professional registered nurse may delegate to and supervise qualified personnel who provide patient care.

Builds a positive work environment by guiding employees to support the mission of the hospital, providing developmental opportunities and encouraging teamwork.

JOB KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE­:

  • Cognitive and technical knowledge and the ability to progressively manage professional health care education delivery across the continuum of care will be required.
  • The ability to retrieve, communicate and present data and information both verbally and in writing is required; as is the ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken and written word.
  • Must be flexible with work scheduling.
  • Involves discretion and independent action within prescribed limits.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of clinical protocols, procedures, and standards within area of nursing expertise.
  • Ability to provide operational guidance and leadership to technical staff in area of specialty.
  • Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.
  • Ability to assess educational needs and design and develop responsible curricula.
  • Working knowledge of the use of established clinical and preceptorship models in the development of clinical education programs.
  • Technical leadership skills within area of expertise.
  • Advanced nursing skills in area of specialty.
  • Responsible for the day to day training of nurses in respective unit of responsibility
  • Collaborates and assists Nursing Educators from other areas
  • Delivery of evidenced-based education to patient care staff on topics such as, but not limited to, new treatment options/plans, standards of emergency room and critical care nursing, the use of new equipment, supplies, and instruments; coordinates in-service training and workshops for appropriate staff.
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Employees must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirement relative to his or her age.
