Job Description:

We are seeking an experienced Subject Matter Expert (SME) in lidar and laser systems engineering to provide highlevel technical support, training, and consultation for advanced multiwavelength lidar systems. This role is intended for a highly trusted specialist who can guide alignment, configuration, and evaluation of complex and sensitive laser subsystems used in LaRC lidar platforms.

Key Responsibilities
  • Parametric Oscillators (1.6 and 1.9 µm), and nonlinear wavelength‑mixing modules used to generate UV outputs for LaRC lidar systems.

  • Provide expert guidance on laser diagnostics and performance evaluation, including divergence, energy, beam quality, and optical damage assessment.

  • Review, assess, and advise on optical ray‑tracing designs, ensuring system performance and alignment with lidar mission requirements.

Required Qualifications
  • BS. in Aerospace Engineering, Atmospheric Science, Optical Engineering, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated expertise in lidar remote sensing, laser diagnostics, or optical measurement systems.

  • Knowledge and hands-on experience with:

  • High spectral resolution lidar (HSRL)

  • Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL)

  • Atomic or molecular vapor filters (e.g., iodine, barium)

  • High-power pulsed lasers (Nd:YAG preferred)

  • Optical alignment, detector systems, and spectroscopic diagnostics

  • Strong analytical skills, including experience with Python, MATLAB, or similar tools.

  • Proven publication record in atmospheric lidar, optical diagnostics, or related fields.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Exceptional proficiency with complex, multi‑wavelength pulsed and high‑power laser systems, including Nd:YAG, OPO modules, and nonlinear mixing crystals.

  • Expert‑level knowledge of optical design and analysis using Zemax or equivalent ray‑tracing tools.

  • Strong understanding of laser electronics and control systems.

  • Demonstrated expertise in airborne lidar system design, integration, and operational considerations.

This position requires US Citizenship or Permanent Residence.
