School Social Worker
Job Description
Purpose Statement
The job of School Social Worker is done for the purpose/s of addressing issues that may get in the way of
student learning through counseling, parent education, outside resources, and referrals.
This job reports to Director of Student Services
Essential Functions
Arranges interim transportation for the purpose of assisting students and/or family members in receiving
required services and/or meetings.
Assesses student and family needs (e.g. financial, medical, parenting skills, McKinney-Vento eligibility,
etc.) for the purpose of developing and implementing individualized plans of services to support
educational objectives.
Collaborates with a variety of outside services agencies (e.g. mental health, probation, medical, etc.) for
the purpose of providing referrals for families and/or students.
Conducts workshops, training, in-service presentations on various topics for the purpose of introducing
new knowledge and developing participant's skills when interacting with students, staff, and families.
Cooperates with district leadership and building personnel for the purpose of developing and
implementing social work programs for student and parents with special problems or needs.
Develops short-term therapeutic interventions for students and families for the purpose of addressing
individual student mental health needs.
Facilitates direct and indirect services to students (e.g. group work, therapy, home visits, etc.) for the
purpose of addressing any issues that interfere with student learning.
Maintains current information regarding community resources for the purpose of making appropriate
referrals when warranted.
Maintains case records for the purpose of documenting activities and complying with mandated
requirements.
Mediates conflicts between parents, teachers and/or students (e.g. parent/teacher, parent/parent,
parent/student, etc.) for the purpose of resolving issues that could impede student's success.
Participates in meetings, workshops and seminars (e.g. training, IEPs, team management, etc.) for the
purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
Provides parent education and resources for families (e.g. parenting skills, community resources, district
programs, social skill development, etc.) for the purpose of assisting parents in maintaining a positive
home environment, building trust between family and district and supporting student's educational
program.
Responds to requests for intervention in situations that could negatively impact the student's education
plan for the purpose of addressing needs of the student and maximizing the learning environment.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in
order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the
functions of the job include: Communicate effectively in verbal and written form; work agreeably with students,
parents, outside agencies, other professionals, etc.; motivational techniques.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios;
review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials, and/or speak persuasively to implement
desired actions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based
competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: emotional and behavioral issues,
treatment methods, relations with community agencies, restraining methods.
ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; often gather, collate, and/or classify
data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety
of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using defined
methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of
widely varied types and/or purposes; and utilize job-related equipment. Specific ability based competencies required
to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: problem solving and conflict resolution.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; leading,
guiding, and/or coordinating others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of resources from other work units

Work Environment
Generally the job requires 50% sitting, 30% walking, 20% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and
healthy environment.
Experience: Job related experience within a specialized field is required.
