Overview

Department Description:

The Reference Library and Photo Archives advances the Museum's research goals by providing research services, tools, collections, and instruction to a wide variety of patrons: Yale students and faculty, YCBA staff, outside researchers, and the general public. The New Haven Promise Intern will be exposed to the library's core functions of reference services, collection development, bibliographic and research instruction, and project management.

Position Description:

The Reference Library and Photo Archives summer project is centered in YCBA art object research using the collections of the library to uncover bibliographic citations to books, journal articles, auctions, newspapers, and online resources. Citations that specifically reference a work of art in the YCBA collection are added to the TMS Bibliography Module according to Reference Library procedures and contribute to the online research capability of the Online Collection Search. The Reference Library staff will orient the intern to the YCBA art collection, the library collection, and the research skills and strategies for uncovering bibliographic citations in contemporary and historical literature using a combination of print and online resources.  The intern will take ownership of a group of YCBA objects and complete the research for each bibliography, entering all information into TMS. The intern will learn basic library skills as well as advanced database and other library research skills. This project is an ongoing Reference Library project that has added over 22,000 citations to the Online Collection Search over the last 10 years.
Required Skills and Abilities

  • Interns do not have to have prior museum or library experience -- the most important attribute is an inquisitive mind and a desire to solve mysteries (each search for citations for an object is a discrete mystery that needs to be solved)

  • The most successful interns will have a superior attention to detail and organizational abilities, and an interest in art, museums, history, and libraries

  • Good communication skills are important as well as the ability to work on their own and to problem solve quickly-- the first portion of the internship involves intensive training with librarians, the later portion is more working on their own with supervision.
