Type: Part-time / Contractor
Compensation: $25 – $30 per hour, based on experience

Through hands-on food and garden-based learning, we help students build healthy relationships with food, explore sustainability practices, and foster community engagement. FoodStream Learn is seeking an experienced Lead Gardening Educator to deliver engaging, hands-on garden education programs in NYC Public Schools. This role is ideal for an educator with a passion for horticulture, sustainability, and experiential learning. You will guide students through garden-based activities that connect classroom learning with real-world skills, while fostering curiosity, creativity, and environmental stewardship.
- Plan and teach weekly garden education lessons for K–12 students during the school day and after-school programs.
- Lead hands-on activities such as planting, composting, soil cultivation, watering, harvesting, and overall garden care.
- Adapt lessons to meet diverse student learning needs and styles.
- Maintain a safe, inclusive, and supportive outdoor learning environment.
- Mentor interns and volunteers in garden-based education.
- Collaborate with teachers and administrators to support school-wide initiatives.
- Contribute to curriculum development, program evaluation, and organization-wide projects.
- Encourage sustainable practices, such as composting and food waste reduction, throughout lessons.
- 1–2 years of teaching experience in schools or community-based education.
- Strong gardening and horticulture knowledge.
- Experience working in urban public school settings.
- Strong classroom management and communication skills.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- PETS clearance (DOE fingerprinting/background check).
Preferred:
- Conversant or fluent in Spanish.
- Bachelor’s degree in education, horticulture, environmental science, nutrition, public health, or related field.
- Training or certification in garden-based education, sustainability, or youth development.
- Part-time contractor role with flexible scheduling based on school program needs.
- Approx. 8-10 hours per week, with a mix of in-school and after-school lessons.
- Compensation based on experience.
- Travel required between school sites; reasonable transportation costs may be reimbursed.
