POSITION SUMMARY:
Provides direct supervision of a group of children in a seasonal day camp. Provides a quality experience to children and parents focused on YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring. Ensure the safety, well-being and personal growth of staff and campers. Responsible for overall daily activities, field trips and events for the assigned camp group.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 16 years of age
- High school graduate or equivalent; one or more years of college preferred for lead counselor.
- Experience working with school age children in a formal setting preferred
- CPR and First Aid Certified prior to the first day of camp/employment
- Previous experience with diverse populations preferred
REQUIREMENTS:
- YMCA of the Chesapeake and MDH regulations: Pre-hire Criminal background check (FBI and MD), Child Abuse fingerprinting (CJIS)
- MDH staff health record stating fitness for working in a day camp and childcare program
- Medication Administration Certification completed prior to first day of camp/employment
EXPECTATIONS and ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Supervises and manages assigned group of children weekly.
- Maintains daily attendance records for the assigned group and reports to Camp Director any absences, issues or concerns.
- Plans and implements theme appropriate program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.
- Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.
- Attends all required staff meetings and 40 hours of pre-camp trainings as assigned by YMCA leadership staff.
- Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
- Maintains positive relations with parents and other staff. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.
- Build relationships with Day Camp parents and use them as resources to provide insight into their child’s behavior.
- Stay informed of staff choices, especially involving discipline, to ensure that campers receive fair and appropriate treatment.
