THE POSITION

The Critical Minerals Technician (Geoscience Trainee) position with the Department of Conservation & Natural Resources offers a chance to explore the geology of Pennsylvania while supporting important research. This role helps you build scientific skills through fieldwork, laboratory tasks, and data interpretation. You will assist with studies that help guide decisions for the environment and the economy. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports geological research by collecting data, assisting with laboratory work, and helping interpret information about critical minerals across Pennsylvania. As a Critical Minerals Technician (Geoscience Trainee), you will perform the following duties:

  • Data Collection: Gather and interpret geochemical and geologic information from rocks, minerals, soils, and other materials
  • Field Support: Assist with mapping, sampling, site visits, and other field activities needed for research projects
  • Lab Techniques: Operate laboratory instruments and prepare samples for analysis using established scientific methods
  • Research Assistance: Compile scientific literature, evaluate findings, and support mineral resource studies
  • Information Sharing: Prepare maps, tables, and presentations to communicate geologic results
  • Collaboration Work: Coordinate with staff, agencies, universities, and industry partners to support project needs

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • This position is federally funded and will continue based on funding availability.
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 5 days per pay period. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Middletown. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Possession of an active Geologist-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists; or
  • A bachelor's degree in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, engineering geology, or a closely related field including or supplemented by 30 college credits in geologic coursework; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes 30 college credits in geologic coursework.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree/credits.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession and maintenance of an active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C driver's license or equivalent.
