About this job
Job Description
OSP Design Engineer (Level 1 & 2) – Fiber Network Expansion
Location: Plain City, OH
Job Type: Contract (6+ Months with high potential for permanent conversion)
Industry: Telecommunications Infrastructure
The Mission: Driving Fiber Connectivity
On behalf of our client, a premier leader in telecommunications infrastructure, we are seeking Level 1 and Level 2 OSP Design Engineers to join a large-scale fiber network deployment.
This is a dynamic role for engineers who want to be more than just "line-drawers." You will serve as the essential link between external design vendors and active construction teams. Our client is looking for engineers who act as the ultimate quality gatekeeper—ensuring that every design package is accurate, compliant, and ready for the field.
If you have a blend of technical fiber design expertise, a "get-it-right" approach to QA/QC, and the willingness to step out of the office for field validation, we want to hear from you.
The Opportunity: Tiered Growth
We are hiring for two levels of experience. Please identify the tier that best matches your professional background:
- OSP Design Engineer (Level 1): Focuses on supporting design packages, performing initial QA/QC reviews, learning permitting requirements, and assisting with basic route analysis.
- OSP Design Engineer (Level 2): Takes ownership of design projects, leads vendor communications, manages complex permitting hurdles, and performs advanced route validation independently.
Key Responsibilities
- Design & Vendor Management: Oversee third-party OSP design vendors. You will be the primary technical contact, clarifying design standards and resolving engineering challenges to keep the project on schedule.
- QA/QC & Design Validation: Conduct thorough quality assurance reviews of engineering packages. Validate fiber paths, handhole placements, and equipment specs (OLTs, splitters, ONUs) against company standards.
- Field Verification: Perform "construction path walks" and drive-outs of proposed routes. You will identify constructability issues and safety hazards before they become expensive field change orders.
- Permitting & Liaison: Act as the face of the project to local municipalities, DOT, and utility companies. You will manage permit applications and communicate proactively with HOAs and local community leaders.
Required Qualifications
- Experience: A demonstrated background in OSP (a mix of construction, drafting, and design experience is acceptable).
- Technical Proficiency: Deep understanding of OSP design principles, network architecture, and construction standards.
- Software Tools: Proficiency with BlueBeam is required. Experience with industry-standard platforms (ArcGIS, AutoCAD, or similar) is essential.
- Field Aptitude: Ability to validate designs in real-world conditions; you must be comfortable conducting route walks and verifying utility locations.
- Soft Skills: Excellent communication and negotiation skills. You must be able to hold vendors accountable while maintaining positive relationships with government authorities.
