Paraprofessionals, also known as teaching assistants, have a variety of duties in the classroom. They often work with teachers to help students learn, manage the classroom, and provide administrative support:


Instructional assistance

Special Education Paraprofessionals can work with students one-on-one to reinforce lessons, answer questions, and help them learn specific concepts. They can also lead small-group discussions and co-teach lesson components with the teacher.

  • Assist teachers in implementing individualized education plans (IEPs) for students.
  • Provide one-on-one support to students with disabilities during classroom activities.

Classroom management

SPED Paraprofessionals can help enforce classroom rules and positive behavior, and supervise students during recess, lunch, and on field trips.

  • They can also help students with personal care tasks like diapering, toileting, and shoe-tying.
  • Help with the development of social skills and behavioral management strategies.

Administrative support

Paraprofessionals can help teachers with clerical duties like grading tests and homework, tracking attendance, and making copies. They can also help teachers prepare for class by getting materials and equipment ready.


Other duties

Paraprofessionals can also help students with special education needs, assist with language translation, and help students and teachers with extracurricular activities and school functions.

  • Organizing the classroom and teaching materials, monitoring the classroom during lessons, and minimizing distractions and disruptions.
  • Supervise students both in a classroom and outside the classroom such as at recess or on field trips. Help minimize classroom disruptions.
Requirements:

Qualifications:

Experience working with children with disabilities is preferred
Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold dignity
Strong communication and teamwork skills
Must be able to pass the paraprofessional test, or have an Associate’s degree, or Two years of full time college credit.


Compensation and Benefits:

Salary is based on years of experience, degree of education, and level of expertise.
