Job Description
Job Title: Patient Care Associate (PCA) – Psychiatry
Location: New York, NY 10025
Duration: 13 Weeks
Shift: Night Shift | 11:00 PM – 7:15 AM
Schedule: 37.5 Hours/Week | 5 Days/Week
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Patient Care Associate (PCA) to support a multidisciplinary behavioral health team in an inpatient psychiatric setting. The PCA will provide direct patient care, assist with therapeutic activities, support crisis interventions, and help maintain a safe, structured, and supportive environment for patients receiving psychiatric care.
Responsibilities:- Assist with patient admissions, room orientation, and explanation of unit policies and procedures
- Provide direct patient care including bathing, feeding, dressing, hygiene support, and vital sign monitoring
- Perform EKGs, venipuncture, specimen collection, urine testing, and simple dressing changes
- Support nursing staff with implementation of individualized care plans and treatment goals
- Lead or assist with therapeutic and recreational group activities
- Escort patients to appointments, testing areas, treatment programs, and approved off-unit activities
- Assist with discharge planning, transportation coordination, and communication with patient support systems
- Respond appropriately during behavioral crises and assist with seclusion/restraint procedures according to policy
- Participate in emergency response situations including CPR and behavioral emergency protocols
- Maintain infection control, safety standards, and accurate patient documentation
- Provide emotional support and therapeutic interaction to patients and families
- Collaborate effectively with nursing staff and interdisciplinary healthcare teams
- High School Diploma or GED with at least 2 years of experience in behavioral health, nursing, counseling, mental health services, law enforcement, or related fields
OR - Associate’s Degree in Mental Health or a related field preferred
- Previous behavioral health or psychiatric patient care experience required
- Venipuncture and EKG experience required
- Ability to manage emotionally distressed or aggressive patients in a professional manner
- Strong communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills
- English proficiency required (speaking, reading, and writing)
- Current BLS Certification (American Heart Association)
- Medical Assistant Certificate OR completion of a Patient Care Assistant training program with EKG and venipuncture training
- CPI or PMCS Certification required
- Successful SEL and SCR background clearances required
- Prior inpatient psychiatric or behavioral health experience preferred
- Experience facilitating therapeutic groups or patient activities preferred
