Overview
A well-established HVAC and mechanical contracting company is seeking an experienced HVAC Buyer / Purchasing Agent to join their team in Farmingdale, NY. This role is ideal for someone with a strong background purchasing HVAC and mechanical materials, negotiating pricing, managing vendor relationships, and sourcing equipment in a fast-paced construction and service environment.
The ideal candidate must have multiple years of hands-on experience ordering and “shopping out” HVAC and mechanical materials, with the ability to ensure projects are supplied accurately, cost-effectively, and on schedule.
Key Responsibilities
- Purchase HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical materials for commercial projects and service operations
- Source and “shop out” pricing from vendors and suppliers to secure competitive costs
- Review project specifications, submittals, and material requirements
- Coordinate material deliveries to jobsites and warehouse locations
- Build and maintain strong relationships with suppliers and manufacturers
- Negotiate pricing, lead times, and purchasing agreements
- Track orders, backorders, and delivery schedules to avoid project delays
- Work closely with Project Managers, Estimators, and Field Teams to ensure material accuracy and availability
- Maintain purchasing records, vendor quotes, and inventory levels
- Assist with identifying cost-saving opportunities and improving purchasing processes
Qualifications
- Multiple years of experience purchasing HVAC and mechanical materials required
- Strong knowledge of HVAC equipment, parts, sheet metal, piping, controls, and related materials
- Experience working with HVAC contractors, mechanical suppliers, or construction companies
- Ability to effectively “shop out” materials and compare vendor pricing
- Strong negotiation and organizational skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and purchasing or ERP systems
- Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent communication and follow-up skills
Preferred Experience
- Commercial HVAC or mechanical contracting industry experience
- Familiarity with local HVAC suppliers and manufacturers
