National Security Associate Attorney

Location: Washington, DC

Direct Counsel is seeking a National Security Associate to join the nationally recognized National Security Practice Group of a premier global law firm in Washington, DC. This is a unique opportunity for an associate with experience in national security, international trade, and sanctions matters to work alongside former senior government officials and leading practitioners on sophisticated regulatory, compliance, investigatory, and enforcement matters.

The practice advises clients navigating increasingly complex national security regulations and enforcement risks across multiple government agencies and industries. Attorneys in this group work on cutting-edge matters involving economic sanctions, export controls, cross-border compliance, government investigations, and national security-related transactions.

Responsibilities
  • Advise clients on a broad range of national security and international trade matters
  • Counsel clients on compliance with:
    • U.S. economic sanctions
    • Export controls
    • National security regulations
    • International trade laws
  • Assist with internal investigations, enforcement matters, and regulatory inquiries
  • Conduct legal research and provide strategic guidance regarding evolving national security policies and regulations
  • Draft memoranda, compliance policies, risk assessments, and client advisories
  • Support cross-border transactions involving national security considerations
  • Collaborate with attorneys and former senior government officials on sophisticated, high-profile matters
  • Work directly with clients across a variety of industries on regulatory and compliance strategy
Qualifications
  • J.D. from an accredited law school with strong academic credentials
  • 2–6 years of relevant experience in national security, international trade, sanctions, or related regulatory matters
  • Prior experience at a leading law firm or relevant government agency preferred
  • Strong knowledge of national security regulatory frameworks and enforcement issues
  • Exceptional analytical, writing, and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and strong work ethic
  • Commitment to outstanding client service and collaborative teamwork
  • Admission to the bar in the applicable jurisdiction or eligibility to waive in
