Job Title: Facilities Maintenance Technician
Job Description

The Facilities Maintenance Technician supports a hospital campus by operating, maintaining, and repairing a wide range of building systems and utilities. This role ensures that heating, ventilation, air conditioning, plumbing, electrical, and general building hardware function safely, efficiently, and reliably across hospital and clinic facilities. Technicians work on assigned shifts to monitor equipment, respond to maintenance requests, and perform preventive maintenance to minimize downtime and maintain a safe, comfortable environment for patients, staff, and visitors.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain mechanical equipment including HVAC systems, hot water heaters, pumps, chilled water systems, steam systems, plumbing, electrical systems, lighting, and other building utilities.
  • Use power tools and hand tools to perform adjustments, repairs, and replacements on mechanical, electrical, and building systems as needed.
  • Read meters, gauges, printouts, and other recording devices and accurately record daily utility logs.
  • Conduct regular walkthroughs of mechanical rooms and building areas to check overall building conditions and identify issues proactively.
  • Operate the building automation control system to view and edit setpoints for building, lighting, fire, and security control systems.
  • Provide electrical maintenance throughout the hospital and associated clinics, including repairs to wiring, electrical fixtures, motors, controls, appliances, and other electrical systems.
  • Repair and maintain all plumbing systems, including cleaning and repairing line plugs, addressing breaks, and performing replacements using appropriate tools and methods.
  • Monitor and maintain building and equipment hardware such as doors, window latches, locks, hinges, and related components, ensuring proper operation and security.
  • Perform repairs on cabinets, countertops, tables, and other general carpentry items within the facility.
  • Troubleshoot, adjust, and repair mechanical systems, HVAC systems, pumps, plumbing, general carpentry, and electrical systems in hospital and clinic buildings.
  • Carry out a preventive maintenance program on all assigned systems and equipment, following established schedules and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records of preventive maintenance activities and associated documentation.
  • Document completed work and time required in the work order system to meet time recording and reporting requirements.
  • Initiate requests for purchasing materials and supplies necessary to perform maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Coordinate with other facilities staff and hospital departments to minimize disruption to patient care while completing maintenance activities.
Essential Skills
  • Demonstrated ability to operate and maintain HVAC systems, including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical systems such as pumps, chilled water systems, and steam systems.
  • Experience performing electrical maintenance, including troubleshooting and repairing wiring, fixtures, motors, controls, appliances, and other electrical components.
  • Proficiency in plumbing maintenance and repair, including clearing line plugs, fixing breaks, and replacing components using appropriate tools.
  • Basic general carpentry skills for repairing cabinets, countertops, tables, doors, and related building hardware.
  • Ability to read and interpret meters, gauges, and equipment printouts and accurately record utility data.
  • Experience using power tools and hand tools safely and effectively for maintenance and repair work.
  • Capability to operate building automation control systems, including viewing and adjusting setpoints for building, lighting, fire, and security systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for diagnosing issues with mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, and electrical systems.
  • Ability to follow and maintain a preventive maintenance program and keep detailed maintenance records.
  • Competence in documenting work and time in a work order system or similar maintenance management system.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Prior experience working in a hospital or healthcare facility environment is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with clinic or multi-building campus facilities is an advantage.
  • Experience in environments with structured compliance or safety requirements, such as healthcare or military settings, is helpful.
  • Comfort working with building automation systems that integrate mechanical, electrical, lighting, fire, and security controls.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills for managing multiple maintenance tasks and documentation.
  • Ability to work independently during assigned shifts and respond promptly to maintenance needs.
  • Strong communication skills to coordinate with hospital staff and other facilities personnel.

Work Environment

This role is based in a hospital environment, specifically within a large medical campus that includes hospital and clinic buildings. Facilities Maintenance Technicians work on-site and rotate across mechanical rooms, patient care areas, and support spaces to monitor and maintain building systems. Available schedules include an 11:00 PM–7:00 AM shift for a Mechanic I position and 3:00 PM–11:00 PM and 11:00 PM–7:00 AM shifts for Mechanic II positions, providing consistent, structured hours. The work involves frequent use of power tools, hand tools, and building automation control systems to operate and adjust HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and other building utilities. Technicians regularly read and record data from meters, gauges, and other monitoring devices, and they move throughout the facility to inspect equipment and building conditions. The environment requires adherence to hospital safety, cleanliness, and infection control standards, with appropriate attire and personal protective equipment as needed for mechanical rooms and maintenance tasks.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $32.00/hr.
