Job Title: Welder Helper
Job Description
This role supports a busy weld shop that produces custom-engineered electrical equipment for the energy, industrial, and critical infrastructure sectors. You will assist welders and fitters by preparing materials, performing grinding and finishing tasks, and handling general labor duties to keep production running smoothly in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
- Assist welders in the weld shop by preparing materials for welding, including grinding, sanding, deburring, and sandblasting components.
- Use hand tools and power tools to clean, prep, and finish metal parts prior to welding and fabrication.
- Perform tack welding as needed to support fitters with assembling and fitting components.
- Move and stage materials safely around the weld shop and adjacent areas to support continuous production flow.
- Support industrial painting and prep work as needed, including sanding and cleaning surfaces.
- Perform general labor duties such as cleaning the shop, organizing work areas, and maintaining a safe, tidy workspace.
- Assist with basic assembly tasks in the production process when required.
- Follow tape measure readings accurately to ensure proper dimensions and fit-up of parts.
- Work collaboratively with welders, fabricators, machine operators, material handlers, and quality control staff to meet production goals.
- Adhere to all safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment and safe operation of tools and equipment.
Essential Skills
- At least 2 years of experience as a welder helper in a manufacturing environment (excluding refinery experience).
- Proficiency with grinding, sanding, and deburring metal parts to prepare them for welding.
- Ability to perform sandblasting tasks safely and effectively.
- Ability to read and use a tape measure accurately for layout and material preparation.
- Experience using hand tools and power tools commonly found in a weld or fabrication shop.
- Willingness to perform general labor duties, including shop cleanup, material handling, and basic assembly.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced production environment with frequent overtime.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety in all tasks.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Previous welding experience or completion of welding school.
- Basic fitting ability to assist with positioning and aligning parts prior to welding.
- Experience with industrial painting or powder coating preparation.
- Background in fabrication or production environments.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary shop team, including machine operators, fabricators, quality control, and material handlers.

Work Environment
You will work in a medium-sized, very clean and organized shop that is one of several facilities in the operation. The weld shop sits adjacent to the machine shop and paint shop within a busy, fast-paced production environment. The facility is non-climate-controlled with open bay doors and ample fans for airflow. Each shift includes around 15 team members, including machine operators, fabricators, quality control staff, material handlers, and leadership, with plans to add powder coaters in the future. The role requires frequent overtime, with both day and night shifts running Monday through Friday from 6:00 to 6:00, and it is common to work 50–60 hours per week. Proper attire includes steel-toe footwear, jeans, a work shirt, and safety glasses, and you will regularly use hand tools, power tools, and production equipment in the weld, machine, and paint areas.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $18.00 - $18.00/hr.
