Overview
A Specimen Processor I prepares and handles specimens received for testing.
Responsibility
- Works under the direct supervision of an employee or supervisor who is trained and competent in all relative procedures and processes pertaining to accessioning as well as other assigned processes.
- Prepares and handles specimens for testing:
- Assigns specimens an internal tracking number (accession ID).
- Compares and verifies identifiers on specimens match the test order.
- Ensures specimens are labeled appropriately.
- Scans, files, and electronically saves paperwork received with specimens.
- Transports specimens to testing labs.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Maintains competency in all assigned laboratory policies and procedures.
- Observes all compliance and regulatory requirements, particularly those associated to data security and patient confidentiality.
- Maintains ethical standards in the performance of testing and in interactions with co-workers and other staff.
- Meets productivity and quality standards/rates set by the department and lab operations.
- Works with team members to resolve department problems and help implement improvement projects.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Data entry experience preferred.
- Excellent organizational, communication, multitasking, and teamwork skills.
- Detail oriented with the ability to multitask.
- Basic computer knowledge needed.
Physical Requirements
Lifting Requirements: Medium work or exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pounds of force frequently, and 10 pounds of force consistently.
Physical Requirements: Stationary positioning, moving, operating, ascending/descending, communicating, observing, reaching, and repetitive motion. Use of equipment and tools necessary to perform essential job functions.
Hazards and Atmospheric Conditions: Exposure to fumes, dust, extreme temperatures, wet and/or humidity, noise, vibration, mists or gases, mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, electrical hazards, and radiant energy hazards.
OSHA Category I: Duties performed routinely requires exposure to blood, body fluid, and tissue.
