Traveling Construction Superintendent

Traveling Superintendent - Retail, Commercial & Grocery Projects

Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Traveling Superintendent to lead and oversee multiple retail, commercial, and grocery store construction projects across regional sites. The Traveling Superintendent will be responsible for ensuring projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and to quality standards while maintaining strong client relationships. Frequent travel between job sites is required to provide on-site leadership, coordinate trades, and drive project execution from preconstruction through turnover.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site leadership and supervision for multiple construction projects, ensuring work adheres to plans, specifications, and quality standards.
  • Coordinate and manage subcontractors, vendors, and on-site labor to maintain productivity and schedule milestones.
  • Develop, maintain, and update project schedules; proactively identify and mitigate schedule risks and delays.
  • Enforce site safety policies and OSHA standards; conduct regular safety meetings and site inspections.
  • Oversee quality control processes, perform inspections, and ensure corrective actions are implemented promptly.
  • Manage daily project documentation including reports, RFIs, submittals, change orders, and progress photos.
  • Serve as primary point of contact for clients, architects, engineers, and inspectors; facilitate effective communication and issue resolution.
  • Monitor job costs and assist the Project Manager with budget tracking, cost forecasting, and change order management.
  • Coordinate material deliveries, equipment, and logistics for multiple sites, and ensure proper staging and storage.
  • Lead project closeout activities including punch lists, final inspections, turnover documentation, and warranty processes.
  • Mentor and train site personnel and subcontractors on best practices, quality expectations, and safety protocols.
  • Travel regularly to project locations and adapt to varying site conditions, schedules, and client needs.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of hands-on Superintendent experience in commercial construction, with demonstrated experience on retail and grocery store projects preferred.
  • Proven track record managing multiple projects simultaneously and traveling between sites.
  • Strong knowledge of construction means and methods, building codes, and permitting processes relevant to retail and commercial projects.
  • Experience with project scheduling tools (e.g., MS Project, Primavera, or similar) and construction documentation platforms.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Solid understanding of construction cost control, change management, and subcontractor coordination.
  • OSHA 30-Hour certification or equivalent safety training; first aid/CPR and other site-specific certifications a plus.
  • Valid driver's license and the ability to travel frequently and remain on-site as project needs demand.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and commitment to delivering projects on time and to client expectations.
