Position Overview

The Sterile Compounding Pharmacy Technician is responsible for preparing sterile medications in compliance with all applicable regulations and internal standard operating procedures (SOPs). This role ensures the safe, accurate, and timely compounding of sterile dosage forms while maintaining a cleanroom environment and up-to-date certifications. The Sterile Technician also rotates to cover non-sterile dosage forms as needed as determined by the Lab Manager.


Key Responsibilities

Sterile Compounding & Preparation

·       Compound sterile preparations in compliance with USP <797> and USP <800> standards.

·       Accurately weigh, measure, and mix chemicals using specialized compounding equipment.

·       Prepare various dosage forms including injections, ophthalmics, and other sterile products.

·       Ensure proper use and maintenance of compounding equipment and supplies.

Non-Sterile Compounding & Preparation

·       Compound non-sterile preparations in compliance with USP<795> and USP <800> standards.

·       Use appropriate tools and techniques to weigh, measure, and combine pharmaceutical ingredients with precision.

·       Accurately compound medications such has creams, capsules, suspensions, and troches following established guidelines and safety protocols.

·       Ensure all compounding equipment and work areas are clean, organized, and properly maintained to support safe and efficient preparation.

Quality Assurance & Compliance

·       Maintain detailed and accurate batch records, compounding logs, and documentation.

·       Perform and document calibration and maintenance of cleanroom equipment.

·       Participate in sterility testing and ensure all compounded products meet quality standards.

·       Monitor and document environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, humidity, air quality).

·       Follow all safety procedures, including proper use of PPE and handling of hazardous drugs.

Inventory & Supply Management

·       Monitor and maintain inventory levels of sterile compounding supplies and chemicals.

·       Remove expired or recalled products and ensure proper disposal.

·       Order and restock sterile compounding materials as needed.

Cleanroom Maintenance

·       Adhere to daily and weekly cleaning protocols, including Friday deep clean procedures.

·       Ensure cleanroom is maintained in a state of control and readiness.

Operational Efficiency

·       Meet sterile and non-sterile productivity goals and turnaround times.

·       Monitor rush orders and ensure timely fulfillment of prescriptions.

·       Communicate with patients regarding prescription delays or issues.

Team Collaboration & Communication

·       Work closely with pharmacists and other technicians to ensure accurate and efficient compounding.

·       Attend team meetings and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

·       Report personnel or operational issues to HR or management as appropriate.

Training & Certification

·       Maintain current Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) status.

·       Hold and maintain PCCA Sterile Technician Certification.

·       Participate in ongoing training and continuing education to stay current with industry standards.


Required Skills & Experience

·       Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT)

·       PCCA Sterile Technician Certification

·       Strong mathematical and analytical skills

·       Knowledge of compounding principles, laws, and regulations

·       Familiarity with using pharmacy software programs and basic PC skills

·       High attention to detail and accuracy

·       Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks

·       Ability to lift up to 20 pounds

·       Experience working in a cleanroom or sterile environment preferred


Work Environment

·       Cleanroom setting requiring gowning and adherence to strict hygiene and PPE protocols

·       Involves handling hazardous drugs and chemicals

·       Schedule is primarily weekdays, but may include evenings, weekends, or holidays depending on operational needs
