Job Overview
Beacon Hill is partnering with a well-established nonprofit organization seeking an experienced Controller to oversee accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting support, compliance, and team leadership. This role will serve as a key member of the finance department, ensuring the integrity of financial information while supporting organizational growth and mission-driven initiatives.
The ideal candidate will bring a strong foundation in nonprofit accounting, experience managing diverse finance functions, and a collaborative leadership style. This position will oversee a team responsible for accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, grant and funder billing, month-end close, audit preparation, and financial reporting.
Responsibilities
- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cash management
- Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting
- Prepare and review financial statements, reconciliations, and supporting schedules
- Support budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, and capital expenditure tracking
- Monitor compliance with accounting policies, internal controls, grant requirements, and regulatory standards
- Coordinate annual audits, tax filings, and external reporting requirements
- Oversee grant and funder billing activities and ensure compliance with funding requirements
- Develop and improve accounting procedures, workflows, and internal controls to increase efficiency and scalability
- Lead, mentor, and develop accounting and finance staff, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment
- Partner with leadership on strategic initiatives, financial analysis, and organizational decision-making
- Identify opportunities for process improvements, automation, and operational efficiencies
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibilities
- Experience managing month-end close, financial reporting, audits, and internal controls
- Prior experience supervising accounting teams and developing staff
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles
- Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and grant or fund accounting
- Advanced Excel skills and experience with accounting systems
- Excellent communication, leadership, and project management abilities
- Ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA preferred
- Nonprofit accounting experience strongly preferred
- Experience working with grant-funded organizations
- Experience leading process improvement initiatives and strengthening internal controls
- Familiarity with Sage Intacct or similar ERP systems
