Machine Operator

Job Description

The Machine Operator safely operates and adjusts a Bottomer machine used in the manufacturing of packaging bags. This role focuses on setting up the machine for different bag types, performing changeovers, monitoring production, and inspecting finished products to ensure they meet quality standards. The position requires attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced production environment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate the Bottomer machine to fold and form the bottom of bags according to production specifications.
  • Perform machine set-ups and changeovers depending on the type and size of bags being manufactured, which may occur once or multiple times per shift.
  • Monitor machine performance throughout the shift and make basic adjustments to maintain consistent quality and output.
  • Inspect end products to verify they meet quality and packaging standards, identifying and reporting any defects or issues.
  • Read and follow work instructions, articles, and machine set-up documentation accurately.
  • Support production and packaging operations by ensuring the machine runs efficiently and safely.
  • Follow all safety procedures and use required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area in compliance with food-grade facility requirements.
  • Work flexible hours, including overtime on weekdays and occasional Saturdays, as needed to meet production and customer demands.
  • Collaborate with team members and supervisors to complete training and pass required tests for skill progression and pay increases.

Essential Skills

  • Proven ability to operate production or packaging machinery in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with machine operation, machine setup, and basic mechanical troubleshooting.
  • Strong attention to detail to inspect and verify the quality of finished products.
  • Ability to read and follow written work instructions, articles, and machine set-up guidelines.
  • Capability to perform repetitive tasks while maintaining focus on safety and quality.
  • Physical ability to lift 41–70 pounds as part of regular job duties.
  • Ability to walk or stand for at least 5 hours during a shift.
  • Reliable attendance and flexibility to work overtime and schedule changes based on production needs.
  • Commitment to following safety protocols and food-grade facility standards, including PPE requirements.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in production, packaging, or paper/packaging industry environments.
  • Comfort working with automated or semi-automated machinery and production lines.
  • Willingness to complete training programs and pass skill-based tests tied to progression and pay increases.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural team environment.
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and a proactive approach to learning and continuous improvement.

Work Environment

This role is based in a food-grade production facility on a first-shift schedule, typically 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with overtime on weekdays and possible Saturdays as needed. The facility is not temperature controlled, so conditions may be hot or cold depending on the season. As a food-grade environment, strict adherence to personal protective equipment (PPE) and hygiene standards is required, including no nail polish, no artificial nails, and no jewelry while working. The position involves standing and walking for extended periods and handling materials that may weigh between 41 and 70 pounds. The work setting emphasizes safety, cleanliness, and consistent production to meet customer and quality requirements.

The pay range for this position is $35360.00 - $35360.00/yr.
