Comptroller
Position Summary
We are seeking a hands-on Comptroller to oversee all financial and accounting functions for a growing small business with a team of six employees. This role is ideal for a self-motivated accounting professional who enjoys working independently, managing multiple responsibilities, and serving as a trusted advisor to ownership. The Comptroller will be responsible for day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, cash flow management, and audit coordination while providing financial insight to support business decisions.
Reporting directly to the CEO, this individual will play a critical role in maintaining the financial health of the organization and helping guide the company's continued growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage all aspects of the company's accounting and finance functions using QuickBooks, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll oversight, and bank reconciliations.
- Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
- Oversee month-end and year-end close processes and ensure the integrity of financial records.
- Monitor cash flow, banking activity, and working capital to support ongoing business operations.
- Develop annual budgets and forecasts and track performance against financial objectives.
- Analyze financial results, identify trends, and provide recommendations to improve profitability and operational efficiency.
- Prepare financial reports and key metrics for the CEO to support strategic decision-making.
- Maintain compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and company policies.
- Coordinate with external CPA firms, auditors, tax preparers, and financial institutions.
- Support annual audits, tax filings, and other financial compliance requirements.
- Establish and maintain appropriate internal controls and accounting procedures for a small business environment.
- Assist with business planning, financial modeling, and special projects as needed.
- Serve as the primary financial resource for the organization, handling both strategic and transactional accounting responsibilities.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a small business environment.
- Strong proficiency in QuickBooks, including financial reporting, reconciliations, and general ledger management.
- Experience managing the full accounting cycle independently.
- Solid understanding of financial reporting, budgeting, cash flow management, and accounting best practices.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple responsibilities.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work directly with ownership and external partners.
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA designation preferred but not required.
- Experience serving as the lead accounting professional within a small company.
- Experience overseeing payroll, tax compliance, and external audit coordination.
