First Response Rail Service is currently looking to fill an open position for a Railcar Repair Technician with mechanical experience in Skippers, Virginia.
Safety is the number one priority at First Response Rail Service, so it is vital that all company guidelines and safety rules are followed while on the job.
The Railcar Repair Technician is responsible for inspecting, repairing, maintaining, and modifying freight railcars in accordance with AAR, FRA, and customer requirements. This position requires strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to work safely in an industrial rail environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Perform railcar inspections and repairs in compliance with AAR and FRA regulations.
- Repair and replace railcar components including brake systems, safety appliances, draft gear, couplers, gates, doors, and other mechanical components.
- Utilize hand tools, power tools, hydraulic equipment, and measuring devices safely and effectively.
- Read and interpret repair procedures, work orders, and railcar diagrams.
- Identify defects and determine appropriate repair methods.
- Perform preventative maintenance and modifications on freight railcars as required.
- Inspect completed repairs to ensure quality and compliance with customer and regulatory standards.
- Maintain accurate repair records and complete required documentation.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Ability to use basic hand and power tools.
- Demonstrate strong attention to detail and the ability to identify discrepancies or potential safety concerns.
- Manage time effectively to meet project deadlines and production goals.
- Ability to constantly use bending, squatting, twisting, climbing, and walking motions throughout the entire work shift.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull heavy materials and equipment.
- Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work outdoors year-round and be exposed to all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, dust, and noisy environments.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.
- Ability to occasionally climb using various types of ladders and access elevated work areas.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous railcar repair, mechanical maintenance, industrial maintenance, construction, fabrication, or related experience preferred.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to read and follow written instructions and repair procedures.
- Commitment to workplace safety and quality workmanship.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
