Sterile Supply Technician

Position Type: Full time (30-40+ hours/week), hourly.

Summary:

Vighter is recruiting Sterile Supply Technicians to provide patient care support at the Naval Medical Center, San Diego, CA. The Medical Facilities in and around San Diego are rated as a complex medical facility, therefore provides care to Active-Duty Military, Veterans, Veterans and Family members locally and from surrounding states. The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the decontamination, cleaning, inspection, assembly, sterilization, storage, and distribution of reusable medical instruments, equipment, and supplies utilized throughout the healthcare facility.

This position plays a critical role in supporting patient safety, infection prevention, surgical readiness, and clinical operations by ensuring that all sterile instruments and equipment are available, properly functioning, and compliant with applicable healthcare standards.

Principle Accountabilities:

  • Receives, sorts, and processes contaminated surgical instruments, medical devices, and reusable equipment following established infection prevention protocols.
  • Performs manual and automated cleaning procedures using approved cleaning agents, ultrasonic cleaners, washer-disinfectors, and other processing equipment.
  • Identifies damaged, missing, malfunctioning, or improperly functioning instruments and removes them from service as appropriate.
  • Maintains separation of clean and contaminated items throughout the decontamination process.
  • Inspects instruments for cleanliness, functionality, alignment, damage, corrosion and serviceability.
  • Assembles instrument trays, procedure sets, and specialty equipment according to established count sheets and manufacturer specifications.
  • Verifies completeness and accuracy of instrument sets before sterilization.
  • Operates sterilization equipment including Steam sterilizers (autoclaves), low-temperature sterilization systems, hydrogen peroxide sterilizers and ethylene oxide systems (where applicable)
  • Selects appropriate sterilization methods based on device specifications and manufacturer instructions.
  • Documents sterilization activities and maintain sterilization records.
  • Maintains sterile storage areas in accordance with infection control standards.
  • Distribute sterile supplies, instruments, and equipment to operating rooms, procedural areas, clinics, and patient care units.
  • Tracks instrument utilization and identify replacement needs.
  • Assists with equipment procurement and inventory accountability activities.
  • Maintains accurate records related to sterilization cycles, biological monitoring, maintenance activities, and inventory management.

  • Knowledge of regulations (HIPAA/Privacy Act) regarding the confidentiality of patient medical records and information as well as Personally Identifiable Information (PII).
  • Performs other duties that may be assigned from time to time.


Knowledge and Skills:

  • Must have exceptional customer service skills.
  • Employees shall be technically proficient in the skills necessary to fulfill the job requirements, including ability to speak, understand, read and write English fluently.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced changing environment with limited supervision
  • Excellent organizational, scheduling and prioritization skills.

Education:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Certification as a Sterile Supply Technician or Sterile Processing Technician are required.

Qualifications:

• A minimum of one (1) year of experience in the sterilization field is required.

• Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.

• Strong team building skills and ability to motivate others.

• Team-player mindset and willingness to collaborate;

Duty Hours / On-call Requirements:

  • Generally speaking, this is a day shift position with some work, mission dependent, at night and on weekends..

  • Location: San Diego, CA

Travel:

  • As required to satisfy the contractual obligations. Commute is non-compensatory. All official travel is government funded.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to stand or sit for more than 8 hours per day.
  • Must be able to use an elevator or walk up & down stairs.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. and carry up to 10 feet.
  • Must be able to routinely grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbows/knees and reach above and below shoulders.
  • Must be able to read and interpret handwritten and typewritten print.
  • Must be able to communicate by voice and detect sound by ear.
  • Must be able to perform duties in an indoor office or outdoor environment.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background investigation.
  • Must undergo urine drug screening (UDS).
  • Must be a Citizen of the United States or legally authorized to work in the United States of America.
