Sterling Engineering is looking for a Senior Structural Project Engineer in Portland, ME supporting a growing engineering consulting organization focused on commercial, institutional, industrial, and infrastructure projects. This opportunity offers long-term growth, leadership responsibility, and exposure to complex structural engineering projects from concept through construction.
Job Summary:
The Senior Structural Project Engineer will lead structural analysis, design, and project management activities for a variety of building and infrastructure projects. This role will support project execution from early planning through construction administration while coordinating with clients, architects, contractors, and internal engineering teams.
Job Duties:
- Lead the analysis, design, and management of structural systems for commercial, institutional, and residential projects
- Perform structural analysis and design in compliance with applicable building codes and standards
- Prepare construction documents, calculations, technical reports, plans, and specifications
- Manage project schedules, budgets, and deliverables across multiple projects
- Serve as the primary structural contact for owners, architects, contractors, and consultants
- Conduct field reviews of existing and active construction projects
- Review shop drawings, respond to RFIs, and support construction administration activities
- Mentor junior engineering staff and support technical development
- Track project costs and schedules to support successful project delivery
- Support client relationship management and business development efforts
- Travel occasionally throughout New England and surrounding regions as needed
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with emphasis in Structural Engineering (Master’s preferred)
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required; Maine PE or ability to obtain preferred
- 10+ years of experience supporting structural building design, additions, renovations, and infrastructure projects
- Experience with steel, concrete, masonry, precast, cold-formed metal, and wood-framed structures
- Proven ability managing multiple projects from concept through construction within fast-paced environments
- Strong communication, leadership, problem-solving, and organizational skills
Software:
- Revit
- RAM
- Bluebeam
- Microsoft Office Suite
- Strong knowledge of IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, ACI, and related building codes

Hybrid
Travel:
Up to 10% travel required
