Floor Technician – Hospital Environmental Services
Monday – Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm
Position Summary
The Floor Technician is responsible for maintaining clean, safe, and sanitary floor surfaces throughout the hospital. This position performs floor care duties including buffing, stripping, waxing, scrubbing, polishing, and carpet care while following hospital safety, infection control, and environmental standards. The technician helps maintain a professional healthcare environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Strip, wax, buff, burnish, and polish hard floor surfaces.
- Operate floor care equipment includes buffers, burnishers, auto scrubbers, extractors, and wet vacuums.
- Clean and maintain carpets using extraction and spot-cleaning methods.
- Remove and replace floor finish as scheduled.
- Sweep, mop, dust mop, and scrub floors in patient rooms, hallways, operating areas, offices, and common spaces.
- Follow proper infection control procedures and hospital sanitation standards.
- Safely handle and store cleaning chemicals according to OSHA and SDS guidelines.
- Place safety signs and barriers in work areas to prevent slips and falls.
- Inspect floors for damage, hazards, or maintenance needs and report issues to supervisors.
- Maintain equipment in clean and working condition.
- Respond to emergency cleaning requests as needed.
- Follow all hospital policies, HIPAA guidelines, and safety procedures.
- Work independently or as part of the Environmental Services team.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous floor care or custodial experience preferred, especially in healthcare settings.
- Knowledge of floor care techniques, chemicals, and equipment operation.
- Ability to safely operate commercial cleaning machinery.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness and safety.
- Ability to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays if needed.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Frequent bending, lifting, pushing, and pulling.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to operate heavy floor care equipment safely.
