Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Telemetry position at a Level II Trauma facility in Illinois, requiring Epic EMR experience and a background in surgical and total joint care.

Details

  • Acute care inpatient Med/Surg Telemetry unit on the 3rd floor of a hospital setting with 48 beds across two buildings
  • Patient population includes post-surgical cases such as laminectomy, cervical fusion, joint replacements (total hips/knees), ostomies, hernia repair, fem-pop bypass, BKA/AKA, as well as patients requiring dialysis, sepsis management, and chronic pain management
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:4–6 on days and 1:5–6 on nights; LPNs are available, along with virtual admission and discharge nurses to assist
  • Primary care nursing model is frequently used — candidates must be comfortable with this model
  • RNs are required to interpret their own telemetry strips; a telemetry monitor tech is also present on the unit (Draeger monitors)
  • RNs are required to titrate Heparin drips per protocol
  • Respiratory therapy manages CPAP (home unit), Airvo, and BiPAP equipment as needed
  • Charting is done in Epic EMR — Epic experience is required as the facility is undergoing an Epic conversion in Q2 2026
  • 13-week contract with 12-hour day shifts (3 shifts per week, starting at 7:00 AM)
  • Schedule is posted 6 weeks in advance; block scheduling is not guaranteed
  • Every other weekend required (both Saturday and Sunday)
  • Travelers are included in the holiday rotation with core staff
  • No call or standby requirement
  • Floating is limited to like units only; if floated to a higher acuity unit, traveler would serve in a helper role without a patient assignment
  • Local candidates are accepted for this position

Requirements

  • Active IL RN license required
  • Active BLS (AHA) and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum of 2 years of RN experience required, with at least 1 year of surgical nursing experience
  • Total joint replacement experience is required
  • Proficiency with Epic EMR is required
  • Experience with PCA pumps, reversal agents (e.g., Narcan), and sepsis management required
  • Experience with TPN, lipids, and narcotic administration required
  • Level II Trauma facility experience preferred

Additional Information

  • Unit is fast-paced with heavy patient loads, receiving up to 8–12 surgical admissions per day in addition to managing discharges
  • Charge nurses typically take a smaller patient assignment to assist the team; night shift charge may be covered by a house supervisor
  • CNAs are available on the unit, though they may be pulled for sitter duties — night shift has greater CNA needs
  • Orientation consists of one 12-hour shift on the hired unit and shift; the first day runs 12–14 hours to complete competencies, computer-based modules, and general orientation
  • Black scrubs are required
  • Candidates must be comfortable working in a primary care nursing model environment
