Job Title: Certified Medical Assistant
Job Description
This Certified Medical Assistant role primarily supports internal medicine and family medicine, with some exposure to pediatrics, in a clinic setting. The position focuses mainly on back-office clinical duties, including robust chart preparation, rooming patients, assisting with procedures, and performing point-of-care testing, while also providing occasional front office support such as patient check-in and check-out during later shifts. The Certified Medical Assistant will work closely with a physician and a nurse practitioner to deliver efficient, high-quality patient care and maintain accurate electronic health records.
Responsibilities
- Support internal medicine and family medicine providers, with some pediatrics, in a busy clinic environment.
- Perform robust chart preparation prior to patient visits, including reviewing prior records and ensuring all necessary information is ready in the electronic health record (EHR).
- Navigate and use various clinical and diagnostic portals such as Quest, Radnet, and NextGen EMR to retrieve and enter patient information, lab results, and orders.
- Obtain and document complete patient medical histories, including current medication lists and allergies, in the electronic health record with a high degree of accuracy.
- Measure and record patient vital signs, ensuring accurate and timely entry into the EHR.
- Assist providers with in-office procedures, including pap smears and other examinations, by preparing patients, setting up instruments, and providing direct clinical support during the procedure.
- Perform in-house urinalysis and other point-of-care testing according to clinic protocols and accurately document results.
- Perform lab draws (phlebotomy) as needed and follow proper handling, labeling, and documentation procedures.
- Clean and disinfect exam rooms thoroughly after each patient visit in accordance with infection control and clinic standards.
- Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, ensuring rooms are adequately stocked, organized, and equipped with appropriate medical supplies.
- Monitor supply levels and restock exam and treatment rooms with necessary medical supplies and materials.
- Provide front office support as needed, including checking patients in and out, scheduling or confirming appointments, and assisting with basic administrative tasks during later shifts.
- Collaborate effectively with the physician and nurse practitioner to coordinate patient flow and ensure timely, efficient care.
- Use Microsoft Office applications and other computer software to support documentation, communication, and administrative tasks.
- Participate in required training, including a two-week training period, and maintain up-to-date certifications such as CPR and first aid within the specified timeframe.
- Follow all clinic policies and procedures related to patient confidentiality, safety, and quality of care.
Essential Skills
- Certification as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through CCBMA or NCCT.
- Graduate of an accredited medical assistant program.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to obtain CPR and first aid certification within 60 days of hire.
- Experience supporting internal medicine or family medicine providers, with at least one year of experience in family medicine (preferred) or internal medicine desired.
- Proficiency in obtaining and documenting patient medical histories, medication lists, and vital signs accurately in an electronic health record.
- Ability to assist with clinical procedures such as pap smears and other examinations.
- Skill in performing in-house urinalysis, point-of-care testing, and lab draws according to clinical standards.
- Basic to intermediate proficiency with computers, including the use of Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word).
- Ability to navigate and use electronic medical record systems and clinical portals such as NextGen EMR, Quest, and Radnet.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in charting and documentation.
- Ability to clean, disinfect, and prepare exam and treatment rooms in accordance with clinic protocols.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills to work closely with physicians, nurse practitioners, and other clinic staff.
- Ability to manage both back-office clinical responsibilities and occasional front office tasks as needed.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in acute care or similar clinical settings is beneficial.
- Experience as a Certified Medical Assistant supporting internal and family medicine is advantageous.
- Comfort working with pediatrics in addition to adult patients.
- Ability to adapt to working at more than one clinic location as needed.
- Strong organizational skills to handle robust chart preparation and maintain well-stocked exam rooms.
- Capability to learn and adapt quickly during a structured training period.
- Professional demeanor and customer service skills when interacting with patients at the front desk.
Work Environment
This role is based primarily in a clinic setting that focuses on internal and family medicine, with some pediatric patients. The Certified Medical Assistant will work closely with one physician and one nurse practitioner, supporting one or the other depending on clinic needs. The position is predominantly back office, with responsibilities such as rooming patients, assisting with procedures, and performing point-of-care testing, while also providing some front office coverage for check-ins and check-outs during later shifts. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM. The role involves working with electronic systems and portals including NextGen EMR, Quest, Radnet, and Microsoft Office applications. Training lasts approximately two weeks and takes place primarily at the main clinic location, with the expectation that the Certified Medical Assistant will be comfortable occasionally working at an additional nearby clinic location, potentially up to two days per week, to support the nurse practitioner. The environment is fast-paced, patient-focused, and team-oriented, with an emphasis on accurate documentation, infection control, and high-quality care. The dress code for this position is black scrubs.
