Job Description

Job Title: General Production Laborer – Precast Concrete

Job Description

This role supports general production in a precast concrete facility, working across dry cast, wet cast, and panel intake areas to manufacture concrete structures such as panels, culverts, flared ends, side walls, and custom forms. You will work in a process-driven, construction-like environment, reading blueprints, using hand tools, and measuring with precision to help produce high-quality concrete products in both high-volume and custom production settings.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with general production duties in the dry cast area and other plant divisions to manufacture concrete structures, including panels, flared ends, side walls, boxed culverts, and custom forms.
  • Follow a highly process-oriented workflow, completing each step in the correct order to ensure efficient and accurate production of precast concrete products.
  • Work within one of three primary divisions on the floor—wet cast, dry cast, and panel intake—and remain open to cross-training and rotating between different projects and plant locations as needed.
  • Participate in boxed culvert production using dry, packable concrete mixes, performing a specific role within a spread-out crew where each person has defined tasks.
  • Accept direction from leadership and follow instructions closely until fully trained and proficient in all assigned processes.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting up to 50 pounds, moving materials, and handling heavy tools and equipment throughout the shift.
  • Read and interpret blueprint drawings to ensure products meet design specifications and quality standards.
  • Use hand tools and a tape measure accurately, consistently measuring to a sixteenth of an inch to maintain precise dimensions and tolerances.
  • Work in the yard and support general labor activities, including staging materials, assisting with loading and unloading, and maintaining a clean and organized work area.
  • Support both East and West plant operations, adapting to high-volume production at the West plant and more custom project work at the East plant.
  • Remain flexible and willing to commute between East and West plant locations when project needs require additional support at either site.
  • Train on overhead cranes and forklifts over time and operate this equipment safely once certified and authorized.
  • Collaborate with a team-oriented crew, contributing to a process-focused culture that emphasizes safety, efficiency, and quality.
  • Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, maintaining productivity and safety in hot, humid summers and colder winter months.
  • Adhere to all safety procedures, wear required personal protective equipment, and follow plant policies regarding conduct, equipment use, and production practices.

Essential Skills

  • At least 1 year of experience in general production, construction, steel work, or a similar hands-on industrial environment.
  • Ability to read and use a tape measure accurately to a sixteenth of an inch.
  • Proficiency with hand tools commonly used in construction or production environments.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly and perform physically demanding tasks throughout the workday.
  • Comfort working in a dirty, construction-like environment, including exposure to dust, concrete materials, and heavy equipment.
  • Willingness to work in hot, humid conditions during the summer and in varying temperatures throughout the year.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprint drawings to follow design specifications.
  • Comfort working in a process-driven role where each step must be followed in sequence.
  • Willingness to take direction from supervisors and foremen until fully trained and capable of working more independently.
  • Strong attention to detail and precision, especially when measuring and setting up forms or components.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a production environment.
  • Flexibility to work at both East and West plant locations as business needs require.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in construction, carpentry, masonry, or concrete work is preferred.
  • Experience in landscaping, groundskeeping, or other outdoor labor-intensive roles is beneficial.
  • Experience with general labor in industrial, manufacturing, or production settings.
  • Familiarity with yard work, material handling, or working in a yardman-type role.
  • Interest in learning to operate overhead cranes and forklifts, with training provided on the job.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, process-focused environment that emphasizes consistent results.
  • Ability to adapt to both high-volume standardized production and more customized project work.
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to work until the job is done when needed.

Work Environment

The work takes place in a specialty precast concrete plant that produces storm runoff components, wall panels for interstates, boxed culverts, and other concrete structures similar to large sewer systems. Approximately 95% of the work occurs indoors within a production building, but employees must be comfortable working both inside and outside in all weather conditions. The facility is heated in the winter but not cooled in the summer, so the environment can become hot and humid. The work is physically demanding, dirty, and closely resembles construction, involving heavy materials, concrete, and process-driven tasks. First shift typically runs from 6:00 a.m. to around 3:00–3:30 p.m., with the expectation of working until the work is completed and occasional overtime. All employees receive training on overhead cranes and forklifts over time. Workers must provide their own steel-toed boots, while all other personal protective equipment is supplied. Dress must align with weather conditions and safety requirements, including wearing jeans and avoiding shorts and sleeveless shirts, with work conducted primarily inside the production building and some roles requiring more outdoor exposure.
