Overview:
As a Laboratory Specimen Support Technician, you will play an essential role in ensuring the efficient processing and handling of clinical specimens within a busy laboratory environment. Responsibilities:

Perform general support functions within the specimen processing department, including presort, pickup, and delivery of specimens to the laboratory.

Accurately enter and manage specimen data, ensuring a high level of precision with a keystroke capacity of approximately 6,000 alphanumeric entries per hour.

Operate equipment such as centrifuges, imaging/microfilming devices, and aliquoting stations to prepare specimens for testing.

Maintain organization and cleanliness of the work area, following safety and biohazard handling protocols.

Assist in specimen receipt and processing, including specimen accessioning, aliquoting, and microfilming as needed.

Adhere to compliance regulations and stay informed of changing test ordering requirements to ensure specimen integrity and accuracy.

Communicate effectively with team members and other departments to meet departmental goals and ensure timely processing.

Demonstrate flexibility by adjusting to daily changes in workflow, scheduling requirements—including night shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime—as directed by staffing needs.

Follow safety policies and contribute to a positive, teamwork-oriented environment.

Required Skills:

Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

Ability to perform high-volume data entry with accuracy and speed.

Good understanding of basic computer systems; familiarity with laboratory software is a plus.

Excellent communication skills, capable of working effectively with all levels of staff.

Ability to work in a biohazard environment while practicing strict safety precautions.

Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and workflows.

Capable of sitting or standing for extended periods.

Nice to Have Skills:

Prior experience with laboratory specimen processing, hospital or clinical laboratories preferred.

Medical terminology knowledge relevant to a clinical laboratory setting.

Experience working in a production environment or in high-volume specimen handling.

Preferred Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Previous laboratory or healthcare experience highly desirable.

Knowledge of laboratory safety standards and compliance regulations.

Other Requirements:

Availability to work primarily night shifts, with additional flexibility for weekends, holidays, and on-call duty based on departmental needs.

Physical ability to handle specimens and equipment, including standing or sitting for long periods.

Ability to work efficiently in a biohazard environment with safety as a top priority.

Willingness to adapt to new procedures and operational changes frequently encountered in a production laboratory setting.
