Key Responsibilities
  • Preventive Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance tasks, including oil changes, fluid checks, brake inspections, tire rotations, and tune-ups, ensuring compliance with state regulations and emergency vehicle standards.
  • Diagnostics & Repair: Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues in both gasoline and diesel emergency vehicles.
  • Specialized EMS Systems: Maintain and repair specialized onboard equipment unique to emergency vehicles, such as high-output alternators, dual-battery systems, inverter power systems, oxygen delivery setups, strobe/LED warning lights, sirens, and communication equipment.
  • Brake & Suspension Systems: Inspect and repair heavy-duty braking systems (including air brakes if applicable), suspension steering, and drivetrain components to guarantee vehicle stability and patient comfort.
  • HVAC Maintenance: Ensure climate control systems in both the driver cabin and patient compartment are fully functional to maintain safe temperatures for patients and medical supplies.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate, detailed digital logs of all repairs, parts used, preventive maintenance schedules, and safety inspections using fleet management software.
  • Safety & Compliance: Adhere strictly to OSHA safety guidelines, Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, and organizational safety protocols. Keep a clean, organized work bay.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Experience: Minimum of 2-3 years of professional experience as an automotive or diesel technician. Prior experience working on emergency vehicles (EMS, fire, or fleets) is highly preferred.
  • Education/Certifications:
    • High school diploma or equivalent; technical degree in automotive or diesel technology preferred.
    • ASE Certifications (Automotive Service Excellence) are highly desirable (e.g., Medium/Heavy Truck or Automobile certifications).
    • EVT (Emergency Vehicle Technician) certification is a major plus (or a willingness to obtain it).
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency using advanced diagnostic scan tools and software to identify engine and electrical faults.
    • Strong understanding of complex electrical multiplexing systems common in modern ambulances.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for long periods, climb, bend, and work in tight spaces or under vehicles.
  • License: A valid driver's license with a clean driving record. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B is a plus but not required.
