Controls Panel Design Engineer
(Industrial Control Panels)
About the Role
Were looking for a Controls Panel Design Engineer who can take customer inputs, drawings, specs, and concepts and turn them into accurate, manufacturable control panel designs.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working at the intersection of customer requirements, engineering design, and production, and takes pride in delivering designs that are right the first time.
Key Responsibilities
Interpret customer drawings, specifications, and control narratives to develop panel designs
Design industrial control panels including:
o Electrical schematics
o Panel layouts
o Wiring diagrams
o Bills of Material (BOMs)
Create and maintain drawings using AutoCAD Electrical and Zuken (E3 or similar)
Work directly with customers to clarify requirements and resolve design issues
Generate complete submittal packages including layouts and device lists
Coordinate closely with production to ensure designs are buildable and efficient
Manage multiple projects and meet customer timelines
Maintain engineering documentation, standards, and drawing libraries
Ensure designs meet applicable codes and standards (UL, NEC, customer specifications)
Required Skills
Experience designing industrial control panels or electrical systems
Strong ability to interpret customer-provided drawings and specifications
Proficiency with:
o AutoCAD (or similar CAD tools)
o Electrical schematic design
Knowledge of:
o PLC I/O layouts
o Relays, sensors, and power distribution
o Industrial wiring practices
Experience developing BOMs and selecting components
Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
Ability to communicate effectively with customers and internal teams
Solid understanding of mechanical and electrical systems and how they interface with industrial control panels (e.g., motors, sensors, actuators, HVAC/BMS systems)
Qualifications
Associate or bachelors degree in electrical engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field
5+ years of relevant experience (preferred)
Experience in a manufacturing or panel shop environment is a strong plus
Nice to Have
Knowledge of UL 508A, NEC, or industry compliance standards
Experience with building automation, BMS, or data center controls
Familiarity with custom, project-based (non-standard) design work
Familiarity with Zuken design software
