Responsibilities
- Prepare the operating room at the start of each day by thoroughly wiping down and disinfecting the room with alcohol-based solutions.
- Monitor and maintain cleanliness and orderliness of all equipment, instruments, and furniture throughout the day to support a safe surgical environment.
- Assemble, maintain, and protect the sterile field from initial setup through completion of each procedure, strictly adhering to aseptic and sterile technique.
- Open and set up surgical cases in a timely manner, ensuring all instruments, supplies, and equipment are present, functional, and properly arranged.
- Perform sponge, needle, and instrument counts in collaboration with another team member to support patient safety and prevent retained items.
- Scrub in and assist with a variety of standard surgical care procedures, including neurology, orthopedic, robotic, cardiovascular, and other specialty cases as assigned.
- Support cardiovascular procedures such as aortic bypass surgery, endovascular aneurysm repair, cardiac bypass surgery, and valve replacement or repair by anticipating surgeon needs and managing specialized instruments.
- Process scopes and other equipment according to established protocols, including decontamination and sterilization, to ensure readiness for subsequent cases.
- Apply aseptic technique consistently during all phases of the procedure to minimize infection risk and ensure compliance with operating room standards.
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia professionals, and nursing staff to ensure efficient workflow and high-quality patient care during procedures.
- Respond to on-call requests during evenings, nights, and weekends, arriving within the required response time and providing full support for emergent and urgent cases.
- Proven experience maintaining a sterile field from initial setup through completion of surgical procedures while adhering to aseptic and sterile technique.
- Demonstrated ability to perform accurate sponge, needle, and instrument counts in partnership with another team member.
- Hands-on experience in scope processing, including decontamination and sterilization, following established protocols.
- Clinical experience supporting a variety of surgical specialties, including neurology, orthopedic, robotics, and standard surgical care procedures.
- Minimum of 1 year of cardiovascular surgical experience, including aortic bypass surgery, endovascular aneurysm repair, cardiac bypass surgery, and valve replacement or repair.
- Ability to take call and respond to after-hours surgical needs, including nights and weekends, within the required response time.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential.
- Strong attention to detail, particularly in maintaining sterility, performing counts, and monitoring equipment cleanliness.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary surgical team in a fast-paced environment.
- Comfort working in a high-performance acute-care hospital environment with a strong focus on patient satisfaction and clinical quality.
- Interest in ongoing professional growth supported by education-focused programs and resources such as structured learning roadmaps and online learning platforms.
- Ability to adapt to a wide range of surgical procedures and technologies, including robotic and advanced cardiovascular techniques.
- Strong communication skills to collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia professionals, nurses, and other perioperative team members.
- Reliability and flexibility to meet on-call commitments and support emergent cases as needed.
