Medical Assistant


Background: Cahaba Medical Care Foundation is a community health center organization providing medical, pharmacy, dental, and behavioral health services to diverse underserved communities in Jefferson, Bibb, Perry, and Chilton counties. We are a Level 3 Patient-Centered Medical Home and Joint Commission accredited organization, committed to increasing integration and coordination of behavioral health and primary care. Purpose: To assist the providers as well as the other nursing staff and medical assistants in providing efficient and high quality patient care within the Street Medicine Program. This role supports clinical care, phlebotomy, and administrative functions while serving vulnerable and underserved populations in community-based settings.

Travel is required to community outreach locations and other assigned sites to complete responsibilities.

Principal Responsibilities:

● Triage patients and take vital signs in both clinic and community outreach settings

● Document all patient care in electronic medical record (EMR)

● Complete patient paperwork including prior authorizations, home health paperwork, medical supply paperwork, referrals, and other administrative forms

● Assist provider with:

○ Performing exams, invasive procedures, and minor surgeries

○ Ordering standard laboratory tests for chronic disease visits

○ Completing quality management in EMR

○ Reconciling medications and allergies for each patient at each clinical encounter

○ E-prescribing medications once the appropriate changes to the medicines have been made by the provider

● Perform phlebotomy duties including blood draws, specimen collection, labeling, processing, and preparation for transport

● Maintain laboratory logs and ensure proper handling and storage of specimens

● Schedule consultation appointments, imaging appointments, and follow-up visits for patients

● Prepare patients for examinations or procedures

● Set up and break down mobile or outreach clinical stations and procedures

● Respond to patient messages, schedule appointments, and coordinate procedures

● Provide administrative support including answering phones, managing patient communication, scanning and filing documents, and maintaining patient records

● Assist with outreach efforts and patient engagement to support continuity of care for unhoused and underserved populations

● Clean and stock rooms, mobile units, and outreach supplies while updating inventory records

● Administer medications and vaccines upon satisfactory assessment of competency

● Perform patient tests and screenings, including x-rays, upon satisfactory assessment of competency

● Perform waived laboratory testing as ordered by physician upon satisfactory assessment of competency

● Remove sutures or staples from superficial wounds, as well as casts, splints, and other external devices

● Work through assigned tasks in EMR

● Communicate with other physician offices, patients, pharmacies, shelters, social service agencies, and ancillary health care offices at the direction of the providers

Additional Responsibilities for LPNs with active license:

● Start IVs, upon satisfactory assessment of competency

Qualifications:

● Satisfactory completion of CMCF Medical Assistant Training Program

● Certified Medical Assistant preferred but not required

● Phlebotomy experience or certification preferred

● Experience in a medical office, community health, or outreach setting desired

● Excellent customer service, organizational, and phone communication skills

● Basic experience with computers and electronic medical records

● Ability to manage time, multitask, and handle high-stress environments

● Ability to work independently in community and outreach settings with diverse patient populations

● Compassionate, adaptable, and mission-driven approach to patient care
