Mechanical Lead

 

Position Title: Mechanical Lead

Location: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Edison Environmental Center, 2890 Woodbridge Avenue, Edison, NJ

Work Schedule: Core hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, except Federal holidays; emergency and after-hours support may be required.

Reports To: Project Manager / Site Superintendent

Position Summary

The Mechanical Lead is responsible for leading the operation, maintenance, diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance of HVAC&R and related mechanical systems at the EPA Edison Environmental Center. This position supports mission-critical building and laboratory environments, including chillers, boilers, air handlers, refrigeration systems, fume hoods, controls, ductwork, and associated distribution systems. The Mechanical Lead is expected to ensure mechanical system reliability, environmental compliance, and safe operation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

· Lead mechanical and HVAC&R operations, maintenance, and repair activities across the facility.

· Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot major equipment including at minimum a 300-ton chiller, 250 BHP boiler, air handlers, refrigeration systems, and generator-related support systems.

· Maintain and support laboratory fume hoods and specialized air handling/exhaust systems to ensure proper functionality and safe operation.

· Perform diagnostics, parts replacement, corrective repairs, and preventive maintenance in accordance with OEM recommendations, EPA schedules, and contract requirements.

· Conduct testing, adjusting, and balancing (TAB), vibration analysis, and oil analysis to optimize equipment performance and uptime.

· Calibrate, sequence, and troubleshoot pneumatic, electric, and BAS/DDC control systems.

· Size, install, and troubleshoot packaged HVAC equipment, window A/C units, and related mechanical components.

· Size, fabricate, and install sheet metal and ductwork; perform testing and balancing to meet design criteria.

· Use CMMS tools and maintenance records to plan, document, and improve preventive maintenance and corrective work activities.

· Maintain environmental compliance when handling, dispensing, or recovering refrigerants, including refrigerant logs, leak protocols, and safe recovery procedures.

· Support emergency mechanical repairs and after-hours response requirements as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

· Five (5) years as a licensed HVAC&R technician.

· New Jersey Black Seal experience/licensure.

· Experience with at minimum a 300-ton chiller, 250 BHP boiler, air handlers, laboratory fume hoods, refrigeration systems, and generator systems.

· Experience performing diagnostics, parts replacement, corrective repairs, and preventive maintenance for commercial or laboratory mechanical systems.

· Proficiency with pneumatic and electric/BAS controls, including calibration, sequencing, and troubleshooting.

· Experience sizing and installing HVAC equipment, sheet metal, and ductwork, and performing testing, adjusting, and balancing to design criteria.

· Knowledge of refrigerant handling, environmental compliance, refrigerant logs, and leak-response protocols.

Preferred Qualifications

· EPA Section 608 certification or equivalent refrigerant handling certification.

· Experience supporting federal, laboratory, research, or mission-critical facilities.

· Experience with CMMS systems, vibration analysis, oil analysis, and predictive maintenance practices.

· TAB-related experience or certification.

· OSHA safety training and strong knowledge of safe work practices in occupied federal facilities.

Supervisory Responsibility

· May provide work direction, technical leadership, and oversight to HVAC/mechanical technicians and assigned support personnel.

Additional Requirements

· Must demonstrate professional conduct, reliable attendance, and the ability to work safely in a secure federal facility environment.

· Must comply with all applicable Federal, State, Agency, OSHA, and site-specific safety and security requirements.

· Must support emergency response, preventive maintenance, reporting, and continuity of operations requirements under the contract.
