Job Description

Residential Designer / Lead Drafter

Lifestyle Lumber — St. Martin, MN
Primarily Onsite | Hybrid Considered for the Right Candidate

About Lifestyle Lumber

Lifestyle Lumber is a growing lumber and building materials dealer serving builders, contractors, and homeowners across central Minnesota. We combine genuine small-town service with modern design tools, accurate quoting, premium materials, and dependable project support.

As we continue to grow, we’re looking for a skilled Residential Designer / Lead Drafter who can help customers take an idea, sketch, plan, or vision and turn it into a buildable project with accurate designs, material takeoffs, and bills of materials.

The Role

This is not just a drafting position. This role is a key part of how we serve customers, support contractors, and improve the building process.

You’ll work directly with homeowners, builders, contractors, and our sales team to create detailed 2D and 3D designs for projects such as homes, pole sheds, agricultural buildings, remodels, garages, decks, additions, and more.

This is primarily an onsite position based in St. Martin, MN. We believe this role is most effective when working closely with our sales team, customers, and day-to-day operations. For the right candidate, we may consider a hybrid onsite/remote arrangement after expectations, communication, and workflow needs are clearly established.

The right person will be detail-driven, comfortable with design software, able to communicate well with customers, and interested in helping build a stronger design department inside a growing company.

What You’ll Do

  • Design residential and light commercial projects, including homes, garages, decks, additions, pole sheds, and agricultural buildings
  • Create accurate 2D and 3D drawings using SoftPlan, Revit, AutoCAD, or similar design software
  • Prepare material takeoffs and bills of materials for quoting and ordering
  • Work with customers to understand their goals, needs, and project details
  • Read and interpret blueprints, construction drawings, sketches, and field notes
  • Collaborate with our sales team to support accurate quotes and customer presentations
  • Help improve our internal design, estimating, and takeoff processes
  • Stay current on building products, construction methods, and residential design trends
  • Provide a professional, helpful customer experience from concept through project planning

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience with SoftPlan, Revit, AutoCAD, or similar design software
  • Strong ability to create accurate 2D and 3D designs
  • Experience with material takeoffs, estimates, or bills of materials
  • Ability to read and understand construction drawings
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Good communication skills with both customers and internal team members
  • A practical understanding of residential construction
  • A team-first attitude and willingness to help improve systems and processes

Experience & Education

  • Hands-on design or drafting experience preferred
  • Degree or technical training in drafting, design, architecture, construction, or a related field is a plus
  • Background in residential construction, lumber, building materials, or estimating is highly valuable
  • SoftPlan experience is a strong plus, but not required for the right candidate

What We Offer

  • Competitive pay based on experience
  • Health insurance
  • Profit sharing
  • Paid time off
  • Primarily onsite role, with hybrid flexibility considered for the right candidate
  • A clear path to grow into a leadership or management role
  • A stable, growing company investing in modern tools and better systems
  • A supportive team environment with strong customer relationships
  • The opportunity to help shape and grow our design department

Why This Role Matters

At Lifestyle Lumber, design is more than drawing plans. It connects the customer’s vision, the contractor’s workflow, the sales process, and the materials needed to get the job done right.

If you enjoy residential design, accurate details, customer interaction, and being part of a growing company where your work has real impact, we’d like to talk with you.
