Job Title: Construction Superintendent – Community Solar Projects
Job Description

This role oversees day-to-day construction activities for community solar projects across Illinois, typically ranging from 1 to 2.5 MW in size. The construction superintendent manages on-site operations from the project trailer, coordinates subcontractors, enforces safety and regulatory standards, and ensures that project schedules and productivity targets are met. This position offers hands-on experience in the renewable energy sector with the potential to move into a long-term role on future projects.

Responsibilities

  • Manage daily on-site construction operations for community solar projects from the project trailer.
  • Oversee and coordinate electrical and civil subcontractors and their forepersons to ensure work progresses safely and efficiently.
  • Report directly to the Senior Construction Manager and provide detailed daily progress and safety reports.
  • Enforce all safety and regulatory policies and procedures on site, including adherence to OSHA requirements.
  • Set and communicate daily and weekly productivity standards for contractors and subcontractors.
  • Develop and maintain a three-week look-ahead schedule and collaborate with the Senior Construction Manager to ensure milestones and deadlines are met.
  • Coordinate equipment and material deliveries with the logistics team and subcontractors to support continuous workflow.
  • Review and interpret construction blueprints, project plans, and specifications on a daily basis and ensure work aligns with design documents.
  • Monitor quality of work performed by subcontractors and address issues or deviations from plans promptly.
  • Use Microsoft Office tools, including PDF viewers, Word, and Excel, to manage documentation, reporting, and communication.
  • Support a culture of safety and continuous improvement on site by identifying and addressing potential hazards or process gaps.
  • Collaborate with project stakeholders to resolve on-site issues and keep the project on schedule and within scope.
Essential Skills
  • Proven construction management experience in commercial projects, preferably with electrical or civil scopes.
  • Technical degree in Engineering or Construction Management, or equivalent extensive construction management experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and detailed construction plans.
  • Demonstrated experience managing subcontractors and sub vendors on active construction sites.
  • Strong computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office, including PDF tools, Word, and Excel.
  • OSHA 10 certification.
  • OSHA 30 certification or willingness to obtain it, with support available if a strong candidate’s certification has expired.
  • Solid understanding of construction safety standards and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Effective communication and coordination skills to work closely with Senior Construction Management and site teams.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Previous experience in solar construction or renewable energy projects.
  • Electrician or electrical construction experience.
  • Experience working on commercial-scale projects in a field supervisory or superintendent role.
  • Familiarity with community solar project structures and workflows.
  • Interest in building a long-term career in the renewable energy industry, with openness to moving between projects as they are completed.
Work Environment

The role is based on active solar construction sites across central and northwest Illinois, supported by an on-site company trailer serving as the superintendent’s primary workspace. Each site typically hosts multiple electrical and civil subcontractor crews working concurrently. Standard hours follow typical construction schedules, primarily Monday through Friday from approximately 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., totaling around 40 hours per week. Overtime must receive prior approval from a supervisor and is not expected to be a regular feature of the role. The dress code is standard construction attire, including jeans and a T-shirt, complemented by appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required on site. The work environment offers exposure to commercial-scale solar projects, providing valuable hands-on experience in the renewable energy sector and the opportunity to move onto new projects as they come online.
