Job Title: Underground Utility Pipe Layer

Job Description

This role focuses on installing underground utility piping systems for water, sewer, storm, and drainage infrastructure on commercial and industrial construction projects. You will read and interpret blueprints and grade stakes, set pipe to precise line and grade, and work closely with equipment operators and crew members to complete high-quality, safe installations.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, utility plans, and grade stakes to determine pipe layout and installation requirements.
  • Measure, cut, assemble, and install pipe for water mains, sewer lines, and storm and drainage systems.
  • Set pipe to the proper line, grade, and slope to meet project specifications and performance requirements.
  • Work safely inside trenches at all times, following OSHA trench safety standards and company safety procedures.
  • Assist with trench preparation, including excavation support, bedding placement, and backfilling operations.
  • Locate, remove, and replace existing underground piping when required by project plans or site conditions.
  • Perform pressure testing of installed systems to verify integrity and proper installation.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, and layout equipment, including lasers, to achieve accurate pipe alignment and grading.
  • Coordinate closely with heavy equipment operators and other crew members to ensure efficient and safe workflow.
  • Support fine grading and rough grading activities using appropriate construction equipment as needed.
  • Help operate or work around heavy equipment such as bulldozers and vibratory rollers in support of underground utility work.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe jobsite, including proper storage of tools and materials and housekeeping of work areas.
  • Identify and communicate potential issues or conflicts in the field and contribute to practical solutions.
  • Follow all jobsite best practices, including safety protocols, quality standards, and productivity expectations.

Essential Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, utility plans, and grade stakes.
  • Strong measuring and layout skills for accurate pipe placement and grading.
  • Knowledge of pipe installation methods, fittings, and materials for water, sewer, and storm systems.
  • Ability to use hand tools and power tools commonly used in underground utility and pipe installation work.
  • Understanding of trench safety requirements and OSHA jobsite safety best practices.
  • Experience working in commercial construction or industrial construction environments.
  • Ability to work effectively around heavy equipment and construction machinery.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure correct line, grade, and slope and high-quality installations.
  • Solid problem-solving ability to address field conditions and installation challenges.
  • Effective communication skills to coordinate with operators and crew members.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with underground utility work, including water, sewer, and storm drainage systems.
  • Familiarity with laser-guided layout and grading tools for accurate pipe laying.
  • History in pipe laying for commercial or industrial construction projects.
  • Experience with heavy equipment operation support, including bulldozers, vibratory rollers, and grading equipment.
  • Knowledge of fine grading and rough grading techniques in a construction setting.

Work Environment

You will work on active construction sites within the Richmond metro area, with job locations typically within a 45-minute drive of Chester, VA. The typical schedule is Monday through Friday from approximately 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., averaging 40–50 hours per week, with flexibility required for some weekend work depending on project needs and weather conditions. The role involves working outdoors in varying weather, in and around open trenches, heavy equipment, and active construction operations across approximately 15 rotating job sites. You will regularly work in a physically demanding environment that requires safe movement in trenches, around bulldozers, vibratory rollers, and other heavy construction equipment, while adhering to all safety procedures and site rules.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Virginia Beach, VA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $28.00/hr.
