Job Summary
Are you ready to join Phoenix College's Athletics team and lead a proud men's basketball program committed to student success, competitive excellence, and community engagement?
Phoenix College is seeking a dynamic and student-centered Men's Basketball Head Coach to provide leadership and strategic direction for all aspects of the men's basketball program. Reporting to the Athletics Director, the Head Coach serves as the primary leader of the program, fostering a culture that supports academic achievement, athletic development, sportsmanship, and student-athlete success both on and off the court.
The Men's Basketball Head Coach oversees and directs all facets of the intercollegiate men's basketball program, including student-athlete recruitment and retention, program administration, fiscal stewardship, fundraising initiatives, and overall program development. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to building a competitive program while promoting academic excellence, supporting student access to scholarships and financial resources, and creating meaningful opportunities for student-athletes to achieve their educational and athletic goals.
This position collaborates closely with administrators, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community partners to advance the mission of Phoenix College and strengthen the impact of the athletics program within a diverse and inclusive learning environment.
Essential Functions
50% - Plans, manages and implements coaching strategy and practice training sessions for student athletes in accordance with established regulations. Organizes, provides for, and oversees the recruitment of prospective student athletes including the evaluation of student athletes in areas of academics, athletic ability, and character. Leads and manages coaching for both individuals and groups. Plans, leads, and implements training programs and game strategies. Evaluates all aspects of the basketball program, recommends and administers basketball budget. Hires and supervises assistant coaches. Suggests maintenance of the basketball facility. Maintains compliance with all applicable transfer, eligibility, and governing body regulations (NJCAA, NCAA, NAIA, institutional, District, and ACCAC).
40% - Plans and manages the overall development of the student athletes including academic success, character building, and community service. Plans and implements academic standards for the program by monitoring student eligibility, retention, and completion efforts. Directs community involvement initiatives for the program and administers fundraising for the program as needed. Serves as program liaison with campus representatives, community partners, and alumni to support academic initiatives, while also planning and implementing athletic promotional programs and fundraising efforts.
10% - Game Management. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited institution in physical education, sports management, sports coaching, kinesiology, recreation therapy, athletic training, sport psychology, or another field related to athletics or sports, management, communications, health, coaching, or a similar discipline, and four (4) years of experience as an athletic coach, preferably at the college level, which includes recruiting experience and two (2) years of senior-level or lead experience.

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job, such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
Desired Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Sports Management, Athletic Administration, Higher Education, Leadership, Exercise Science, or a closely related field.
- Five (5) years or more of collegiate coaching experience, including experience leading, managing, or supporting an intercollegiate athletics program.
- Three (3) years or more of experience supporting student-athlete academic success, retention, persistence, degree completion, and/or transfer achievement.
- Three (3) years or more of experience in developing and implementing fundraising initiatives that generated financial support, sponsorships, donations, scholarships, equipment purchases, or program enhancements.
- Five (5) years or more of experience serving as a Head Coach in basketball at the high school, collegiate, or equivalent competitive level, with responsibility for program leadership, athlete development, staff supervision, and program operations.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with NJCAA, NCAA, and/or NAIA rules, regulations, compliance standards, eligibility requirements, recruiting guidelines, and student-athlete participation requirements.
- Experience working collaboratively with facilities and/or operations staff to coordinate athletic facility needs, event logistics, equipment setup, and venue preparation for practices, competitions, and special events.
- One (1) year of full-time, relevant MCCCD experience within the previous two (2) years.

1. Possession of a valid State of Arizona Driver's License (Class D) may be required for some assignments
2. CPR/AED certification may be required to be obtained and maintained on an annual basis

Working Conditions: Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with frequent exposure to a variety of weather conditions, for short or long durations, including rain, wind, dust, cold temperatures, and extreme desert heat. Work may include moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, fumes, odors, poor ventilation, gases, blood, or other body fluids); frequent exposure to crowd conditions, distressed persons, persons exhibiting menacing behavior, and loud and intense noise. This position may stand for extended periods of time.
Travel and Work Schedule: Depending on the season and program schedules, local or out-of-state travel, including overnight stays, is required to perform the essential duties of this position. Some assignments may have oversight of activities that can occur during non-standard work hours, or during/preceding games. The ability to work evening hours, weekends, or otherwise non-standard hours is required to perform the essential duties of this position.
