Job Description
The Material Handler supports daily operations by accurately filling orders, monitoring and adjusting chemical inventory levels, and moving products throughout the facility. This role combines hands-on material handling with basic computer and office tasks, ensuring that products are picked, packed, and recorded correctly in the inventory system. Each day brings a varied list of tasks, offering a dynamic work experience in a manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
- Fill customer and internal orders accurately using a scan gun and follow established procedures to ensure correct items and quantities.
- Check and maintain inventory levels of chemicals and other products on a daily basis, identifying and reporting shortages or discrepancies.
- Use the inventory system to check products in and out, logging all movements and adjustments in a timely and accurate manner.
- Operate a pallet jack to move products safely around the facility, including staging, loading, and unloading materials as needed.
- Lift and place lighter products onto and off of shelves, ensuring items are stored safely and organized for efficient retrieval.
- Use Excel and general office software to communicate inventory needs, order status, and other information with team members and other departments.
- Sort, pack, and prepare products for shipping and receiving, ensuring items are labeled, packaged, and documented correctly.
- Support shipping and receiving activities by assisting with the movement, verification, and organization of incoming and outgoing materials.
- Follow all safety procedures while working around chemicals, machinery, and forklift traffic, maintaining a clean and orderly work area.
- Adapt to a varied daily task list, completing assigned duties efficiently and responding to changing priorities as needed.
- Collaborate with other employees on the shift, coordinating tasks and communicating clearly to support smooth production and material flow.
- Experience in material handling, including lifting, sorting, packing, and moving products in a manufacturing or warehouse environment.
- Ability to use a pallet jack safely and effectively to move materials within a facility.
- Basic computer skills with the ability to use a computer for day-to-day activities, including logging inventory adjustments and accessing the inventory system.
- Ability to use a scan gun or handheld scanner to pick orders and track products in and out of inventory.
- Proficiency with Excel and general office software to communicate needs and update basic information.
- Capability to perform physical tasks such as lifting lighter products, placing items on and off shelves, and standing or walking for most of the shift.
- Attention to detail and accuracy when filling orders, checking inventory levels, and entering data into systems.
- Willingness to work safely in a factory environment around chemicals, machinery, and forklift traffic.
- Some knowledge of operating a sit-down forklift is preferred and will be beneficial for future responsibilities.
- Previous experience in shipping and receiving, including packing and preparing orders, is an advantage.
- Background in manufacturing or factory environments is helpful for understanding production and material flow.
- Strong communication skills to coordinate with coworkers and share information about inventory and orders.
- Ability to adapt to changing daily tasks and priorities in a dynamic work setting.
This opportunity offers a dynamic and varied workday where no two days are exactly the same, allowing you to develop a broad range of skills in material handling and inventory control. You will work in a small, close-knit team environment where collaboration and communication are valued, and you can see the direct impact of your contributions on day-to-day operations. The role provides hands-on experience with industrial equipment and inventory systems, creating opportunities for growth and expanded responsibilities over time.
Work Environment
The role is based in a factory environment where temperatures vary depending on the day and production levels. When multiple machines run, the plant can become hot regardless of outside weather, while on other days it may feel cold depending on conditions. The first shift includes roughly 10 other employees, creating a small-team atmosphere with regular interaction. There are multiple forklift operators moving throughout the facility and a maintenance professional responsible for equipment repairs, so awareness of surroundings and adherence to safety practices are essential. The position involves a mix of time on and off forklift-related activities, with approximately 40% of time associated with forklift work and 60% focused on other material handling and inventory tasks. Standard shift options include 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
