WIC Breastfeeding Peer Helper/Clerk Job Description

Part time: 3 days a week

Position Summary

Under the supervision of a WIC Director, the Breastfeeding Peer Helper provides basic breastfeeding information, encouragement, and support to pregnant and postpartum women participating in the WIC program. The Peer Helper makes referrals to health professionals when concerns exceed their scope of practice. This position plays a vital role in assisting WIC participants and ensuring efficient clinic operations. The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, be compassionate, and be committed to providing excellent customer service in a public health setting.

Breastfeeding Peer Duties:

  • Contact pregnant and breastfeeding participants by phone, clinic visits, mail, text, or outreach activities.
  • Provide breastfeeding education and encouragement.
  • Share information on breastfeeding benefits, positioning, latch, milk supply, and common breastfeeding concerns.
  • Provide emotional support and encouragement to mothers and families.
  • Refer complex breastfeeding issues to lactation consultants, dietitians, nurses, or other health professionals.
  • Assist with breastfeeding classes, support groups, and community outreach events.
  • Help maintain breastfeeding educational materials, displays, and resource libraries.
  • Document participant contacts and maintain accurate records in the WIC system.
  • Assist with breast pump education and distribution when authorized.

Clerk Duties:

  • Greet and assist clients in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Schedule and confirm WIC appointments.
  • Perform eligibility screenings and data entry in the WIC system.
  • Verify participant identification and required documentation.
  • Issue food benefits using the WIC electronic system.
  • Answer phone calls and provide general information about WIC services.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.
  • Support nutrition staff with clerical tasks as needed.
  • Assist with outreach and participant engagement efforts.
  • Maintain accurate records and filing systems.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Personal breastfeeding experience of at least 6 months.
  • Ability to relate to WIC participants and provide peer-to-peer support.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Valid Ohio driver's license.
  • Ability to complete required WIC breastfeeding training and continuing education.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Former or current WIC participant.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Knowledge of community resources and maternal-child health services.

Pay Grade and Starting Rate

Pay grade 1. Starting rate $14.00/hr.
